error 0x800701b1 a device which does not exist was specified

Everytime I plug a 3.0 usb flash drive into any of my 3.0 ports I get this error. I have the HP ENVY Desktop - 750-114 which has 4 usb ports (2x2.0 & 2x3.0) on the top and the same on the back so 8 ports in all. When I plug a 3.0 flash drive in a 2.0 port no error and it works, but only at 2.0 speeds. I thought it was the flash drive giving me errors so I bought 2 new ones and still the same thing.

Basically I plug the flash drive in and start copying stuff over, it'll get to 1% and give that message and the drive disappears from the computer. I have to unplug that flash drive and put it in another slot and it gives me the scan and fix message.

Thanks if anyone has any answers. I'm trying to clear off my pc now so I can do a complete format and see if that corrects the issue.

What version of manufacturer/Windows?

Try going to the manufacturer website and download any USB related drivers for your PC model.

Windows sometimes doesn't natively recognize usb3.0 ports

Thanks, It's on Windows 10, it was originally 8.1 but it upgraded since then. Since it's a hp would that be the manufacturer site? If so I've done that.

That would be the site. You can try reinstalling the drivers. Go to Device manager, find the USB ones, right click, select uninstall. Then reboot and it'll reinstall on the reboot

Tried that and still a no go. No clue what this is. What's even weird is I tried using the drive on my tv after copying some files using the 2.0 port but it plays a file for a few seconds and cuts out.

Just right now, i encounter the same error 0x80070181 after repairing a non detectable laptop hdd. Tried to search on google but found no clear solution.

I have fixed the laptop hdd and the error 0x800.. by just opening file explorer, right click on the drive with error, properties, tools, repair or scan for problems and that will fix the error

My issue was with the usb 2.0 port on my desktop. On device manager i had "!" on one of the usb port drivers , tried to update the driver but it didn't find newer driver. Couldn't fix the issue with this port. However When i tried the 3.0 usb port in the same pc i had no problems.

Why not just try the thumb drive in another device eliminate the PC/USB Drive? or boot off Linux to eliminate the OS? Also HP has built it diagnostics which will test the machine and let you know if you need a bios update or if the onboard devices are having issues.

Also learn the event viewer also these are the basic trouble shooting tools that will help you resolve the matter. Additionally, when discussing Windows 10 you should also include the Windows build this can be found by just tying winver in a DOS window.

Hola.
