Product Description: | High End Audio for the Rest of Us The LSiM705 fills your world with its wide, dynamic soundstage and its capability to effortlessly achieve truly staggering volume levels. The LSiM705 features the same component complement as the larger LSiM707 loudspeaker, on a slightly smaller scale. It includes a 5 1/4-inch mid-woofer of lightweight super cell aerated polypropylene for smooth blending with its dual 5x7-inch Cassini oval subwoofer radiators enhanced by Polk's patented PowerPort bass venting. Its 1-inch ring radiator tweeter, a feature usually found only in exotic speakers, reveals pinpoint details for realistic imaging. Use the LSiM705 in midsized rooms where you want the full-on impact of the legendary Polk sound. Features Polk's exclusive dynamic sonic engine design optimizes the midrange driver and the ring radiator tweeter in separate interior chambers for improved transient response, superior imaging and greater horizontal off-axis response. Enhanced, reengineered ring radiator tweeters extend top-end response for incredible details and realistic imaging. Newly designed Cassini oval subwoofer drivers, with more surface area than round drivers, dramatically improve low-frequency response for deep, well-blended bass.Polk Audio innovative overhung voice coil design augments the excursion length for subwoofer drivers, increasing their power-handling capabilities and enhancing bass response. Extended Linear Motion voice coil design allows lots of movement in a limited space, eliminating impedance and extending mid- and high-frequency response. Lightweight, rigid cast aluminum baskets are designed for precision motor alignment with unobstructed linear movement and ample venting. Klippel motor optimization uses laser measurement technology to ensure a smooth excursion path at either end of the volume spectrum for uniform performance at both low and high volumes. Polk's proprietary, patented Dynamic Balance technology allows Polk Audio engineers to design out distortion-causing driver and system resonances, so you only hear the good sounds.Polk Audiosuper cell aerated polypropylene cone is the ideal balance of lightweight stiffness (for more efficient action with less distortion-causing flex) and superior damping properties. Durable, computer-modeled, injection-molded butyl rubber surrounds suppress unwanted cone resonances for a lifetime of reliable sound. Exclusive, patented Orth crossovers increase lower-order power handling and smooth the impedance curve, for more efficiency and better high frequency response. High quality, heavy duty LSiM enclosure construction features 1.0" MDF on the sides, 3/4" MDF on the back and bottom and 1 1/4" baffles with substantial internal bracing and separate interior cabinetry for each driver. These exceptionally robust materials efficiently eliminate cabinet resonances and standing waves for less distortion and more dynamic transparency. Beautiful furniture-grade hardwood veneer cabinet finishes, with sleek trim accents and no visible screws. Super-thin zero-diffraction grilles lock in place magnetically and never obscure your sound. PowerPort bass venting is Polk's patented design for smoothly transitioning the air flow from the port into your listening area, eliminating turbulence and distortion, for bigger, more efficient, deep bass impact. All Polk loudspeakers are timbre-matched within their series, designed with the same components throughout, to achieve seamless speaker-to-speaker blending effects in multi-channel systems. |

Honestly, these speakers look beautiful from my many months of research. They will play movies just fine. It really is all about what you yourself hears.
The narrative about more power=better sound has been going around for eons also and will continue to do so.
I think you stated it well when you said "meaning you will need more power to get the same "loudness" as more sensitive speakers".
So in other words if you have an issue with the sound more power isn't going to correct that issue, it just gets to that "loudness" much easier.
More power will come in handy if you prefer listening at high levels but thats more so your receiver doesn't overheat not improving the sound.
There are VAST other things to consider when it comes to what you hear and as you stated
"It really is all about what you yourself hears" is a major part of it.

They arent /bad/ for movies, they are just geared (and built) more for music. The polk rita's are more movie friendly. You can use either speakers perfectly fine for either purpose, but many will point to one being better suited for the other. The LSi's are just a lot more power hungry then the Rtia's, which means if you're wanting better dynamics musically, you'll need some good separates to run them. Doesnt mea you cant run these off just a reciever. It all comes down to how loud (what dB level) you plan on running these and how much of an area you are trying to fill with sound. Funny enough a lot of people think expensive speakers and tons of power is the key to good sound, when easily over 50% of good sound is based on your listening area.
I hear this narrative a lot but honestly have never heard a good answer. One thing, as someone mentioned, is that these aren't the most sensitive speakers, meaning you will need more power to get the same "loudness" as more sensitive speakers. The only reason I would maybe not consider towers is if you are 100% movies as your subwoofer should carry most of the deep notes, which could make towers overkill.

Room treatment is almost more important then high end equipment. Think of it like a car, you could have 500hp car, but if your wheels and suspension suck, it won't make a difference. Because if you have a 200hp car and keyed in suspension and wheels, you can put the power where you need. So if you have awesome speakers and loads of power behind them, but you have tons of open tile/wood floors with empty walls, the sound is just going to bounce around and not be as tight as it should be, think spinning wheels on the ground. That's why room treatment is key; rugs, treatment on the walls and ceilings, bass traps, things like that. Now in reality unless you have a dedicated home theater, most people cant do this. We all want the best sounding systems, but remember if you listening area isnt addressed, the best system in the world will still fall flat. You'll get the best bang for your buck addressing the room first and foremost, because you'll never know how your system SHOULD sound
