I have the version of this jacket without a hood. Normally that one sells for $50 so this is a good deal. It's very light. It's warm down to freezing temps but I prefer to layer with another light jacket or sweater, etc. underneath if the temp gets down into the teens or low 20s. This jacket is very warm on its own especially for how little it weighs. It can be packed pretty small too.
How good is the quality on the jacket? Is it warm enough for Chicago's cold?
As someone who has a prime tolerance for cold, I'd say it's mint in the 20-40 degree range. Anything colder than that, you'll want to step up a bit from it, with better fill. I also have an EB Turbodown jacket for temps <20.

I recently purchased this one from Eddie Bauer store and returned it after few days cause it wasn't warm enough for me and it had duck smell that wouldn't go away.
It totally depends upon how resistant your body is to cold temperatures.
But speaking of quality, this is of a much less quality than their First Ascent range. The price reflects the same.

I definitely agree. I bought this same jacket last year when it was frontpage deal. It is super thin and great for fall and early winter weather. Once it starts to dip below 20 deg or so, it's best to get a thicker coat. It's really not designed for really cold temps.
It is not that great of a deal. I see them at my Eddie Bauer store for this price all the time. This is the model that is always on sale before, during and after the holidays. When the rewards certificates come out you will be able to get is for $40 or less.
