I've spoken to about 100 people over the last 6 months, tried over a half dozen VR headsets, including owning 3 simultaneously at one point. Here's a copy/paste of what I've captured as a result of all that.
Most people recommend you get a PC SteamVR comparable device, make sure the device IPD (eye spacing) matches yours, get a used one if you're on a budget, or a better one if you want to spend more money:
• $150 WMR like a used Odyssey+ or a NEW other brand if on a budget. It's like 95% as fun as the $1k.
• $200 PSVR if you have a PlayStation and want easy access, BUT with greater long term cost, significantly reduced experience, reduced quality, and much fewer games)
• $250 Used Vive if you want "best in class" 360-degree hands/head tracking accuracy "Base Stations", the most games, or to eventually upgrade to an Index and save what you spent.
• $350 Rift S if hand tracking and upgrade is not that big of a concern AND you fit the non adjustable IPD range.
• $400 Oculus Quest if you don't have a PC with a GTX 960 or better, or wireless is more important than graphics and long term game cost. (though the "$20 near-wireless" add-on solution for other headsets is good enough IMO)
• $750+ Valve Index if you want the "best-in-class" 360-degree controllers/tracking/sound, gfx, & overall quality on a bigger budget (total cost of what I now have, w/ used Vive lighthouse base stations)

I'll go delete them if that's what's best.... People are welcome to reply or PM me if they missed it.
The overwhelming number of thumbs up on the last one (50+), shows it was really helping people decide what to buy, and how to get into VR.

Does that mean that I should not get the Rift S? What would be the setbacks from having a higher IPD like mine? Should I still buy it and return it in case I don't like it? If anyone could help me making the decision I would highly appreciate it. Some of my points are: Im mainly going to be using this as my flight sim headset, so no walking around the room with it. It will be always plugged into my PC, no need for a wireless headset. This will be my first VR, wanted something with good quality where I could read the text on my simulator cockpit, but at the same time I don't want to go with a $1000 dollar headset that my gtx1080 wouldn't be able to run at its full potential, I wanted to buy something that would get me into VR and last until next year when new vgas will come out. I would then upgrade both VGA and VR next year.

Or go to the FIT-in-VR steam link in the first post here, and ask if anyone there with a similar IPD has found the Rift S was "fit" for them.

Looks like it may have been a site mistake. Price jumped back up after I posted this.
Used VR a few years ago when it was getting popular. Thought it was neat. At $350 I'm willing to bite as I already have a beastly gaming desktop. With the new Half Life coming out, figured now would be a good time. If it sits on the shelf collecting dust...I'll probably still keep it and bust it out for skeptical friends.
