I have had this for nearly a decade and it works great (lcd display is a little flaky at this point). Only warning is that it's just *barely* big enough for St Louis style rack of ribs.

This will be my first smoker. Originally wanted to go for the Weber smoker, but comments on SD made me decide to go for an electric smoker first. I liked this one because it also allows for the mailbox mod.

New to BJ's. One just opened up a few miles away. Currently a Costco shopper. Can anyone comment on difference between BJ's and Costco? Is it worth $55 for another membership?

I don't have one, but I'd say you made a great choice for a first smoker - people love them and get great results. Check Smokingmeatforums dot com if you need any ideas or advice. Can't go wrong for this price.

PSA to anyone on the fence: DON'T do what I did and get a cheap offset for a first smoker. Electrics like this don't look as cool but they are so much more convenient that you might actually use it. After trying lots of styles of grills/smokers, I'm in love with pellet poopers now and may never use anything else, but starting with a Masterbuilt electric is a recipe for success.

I had a similar model that I bought about 5 years ago. Admittedly, I didn't take very good care of it and the control panel went bad. This is easily a steal and the smoker does a great job for the novice that likes some easy at-home BBQ. Looking forward to using this on Thanksgiving...smoked turkey will change your Thanksgivings forever. Thanks OP.

EXACTLY what I was going to say. Smilie

I've made probably 500 pounds of pulled pork on this thing and it really is the easy button. Always turns out great. I've done chicken legs as well. Very easy and very delicious. This is a great price.

Alright unit, I have it. A lot of the MES have issues with the heating element going bad and tripping your fuse.

Overall decent unit for beginning smokers but intermediate and up need to get a true smoker!

I have one of these and it works great! Also easy to use which means that you'll actually use it. I highly recommend buying a cheap cover for it. Keep the electronics dry because that is what will eventually kill it.

Any way to buy this online if you are not a member? There's no BJ's in my area.

Edit: I did some research and it looks like there's an online only pass for $10/year. Is it still a good deal with $10 membership fee and $20 shipping?

Yeah, I currently have a MES40 in the garage where the heating element went bad and tripped the GFCI. Been meaning to fix it for over a year now haven't got around to it. Especially after I got nice deal on a 22" WSM, barely used on OfferUp. Been using the WSM for almost a year now, and don't think I'll go back to electric ever again.

That said, it's a good starter smoker for sure. especially for this price. may need to mods, and a reliable external temp probe - but most smokers I've seen needs reliable external temp probes.

Ugh. Want this but not a member. Hopefully something else will pop up holiday season.
