If I understand correctly, this only works for new subscribers to ultimate. Not for people who already have it.

I have a xbox gold subscription that just ended and have used ultimate before which ended as well. Just got the offer for both at $1 total for 3 months. Just popped up when checking today.

Yup, but even still it's almost worth getting a new account given how valuable the $1 upgrade is. You can buy up to 3 years of gold and instantly turn them into ultimate for $1 more. Plus if you turn off auto renew when you purchase gold you'll get an extra month each time. In my case, I bought two years of gold for $110 and got 26 months of ultimate for an extra dollar.

So if I buy 2 years of Xbox live, do the $1 3 month ultimate fame pass, would I end up with 4 years of Xbox live (2 yrs that I purchased + 2 yrs free with game pass ultimate I bought)?

They're combining the two services. So buy as much xbox live as you want, up to 3 years...then you'll see the option to upgrade your gold to ultimate game pass for $1. Then you'll have ultimate game pass and live gold for however much you bought. 3 years is the most you can stack, I believe.

It should work. I previously had 3 years of regular game pass and then I did the $1 thing. It says I have 3 years of game pass ultimate so here's to hoping.

yea boi getting Xb live for two years for 100 or three yrs for 150, and getting this Ultimate promo for $1 you'll get so much more bang for the buck than buying those 3 month chunks of ultimate for $25.
