This thing is super useful. Got one of these for each of my elderly relatives and connected it to their oomas and alexa devices. I put an alexa in each room and my aunt already used it for calling 911 when she fell over and couldn't get up (it actually happens). The ooma has a great feature where it will text me if any of them dial 911 so I can help out too. Cool
The one thing that did piss me off was mentioned in the one star reviews as well. You have to use a mobile phone to set it up so they can steal all of your contacts. I bought a POS android phone from BB for $40 and used this to set it up since I could limit the contact info sent to amazon. I only added the contacts to it that I/they wanted. Stupid, but the voice activated 911 functionality was worth it. It is lame that amazon is using devices like these as Trojan horses to get into your contacts and data mine you however...
Cant echos make phone calls without these over the internet?

Heck - why not. 10% cash back site, 10% discount using amazon cc, $1 digital credit - I'll give it a try for $10!

There are plenty of inexpensive VOIP lines available and my ooma is free since I'm grandfathered in.

I don't take calls on my home line, I occasionally dial out on it but mainly use it when I have to provide a phone number to credit card companies etc.

That way I don't have to give out my cell and hopefully minimize the garbage phone calls.

Had a heck of a time setting up. Had to get Amazon involved in my case. There was this round-about accept terms and conditions accept there was no where to so. Very frustrated with that process, but worth the work as it works great with my echos. Certainly a no brainier at this price

Based on the reviews, this thing has some serious caller ID issues but I am in for one anyway. Don't have a phone out on my dock but do have an echo out there, so this is basically adding a phone out on my dock for $10 so that I don't miss a call and caller ID is not that big a concern out there.

That was my understanding!
I just set up by echo dot and called the UK for free. If I use one of these would I not then be responsible for call charges on my regular phone service?
