"Melatonin is available in some countries, including the United States, as an over-the-counter preparation. We suggest the use of low, physiologic doses (0.1 to 0.5 mg) for insomnia or jet lag (Grade 2B). High-dose preparations raise plasma melatonin concentrations to a supraphysiologic level and may desensitize brain melatonin receptors, which could alter normal day/night melatonin rhythms."

Heads up that many people need as little as 300 mcg (1/10 of this dosage) to get significant effects from melatonin and that taking too large a dose can actually be counterproductive.

For me, the sweet spot seems to be 600mcg

A very small dose (0.3 mg) of melatonin is usually sufficient to restore nighttime plasma melatonin levels to those characteristic of young people, and to accelerate the resumption of sleep after premature awakenings. The much larger doses that are marketed can produce side effects that are not observed when the melatonin in the plasma derives solely from its secretion by the pineal.
