I guess this is useful as a home server? Okay, I got no clue; is this a good deal, and what are the use cases?
low end or starter servers its pretty great for. the single thread being 4.7ghz makes it pretty great for anything reliant on a single thread. There some scheduled tasks I run at work that in the main VM it would take twice the time to run if it were on a machine like this instead. my home file server is at 12 drives these days so I don't have a use for one of these.
Just a heads up, I got one of these for this price on cyber monday... I like it... it has good performance for the price. However, unlike the T30 it doesn't come with the extra drive caddies (blue holders for additional hard drives) and doesn't come with the SATA cables. SATA cables are easy to come by but Dell Support told me I can't even buy additional caddies from them so I have to rely on ebay which sucks. It also only supports 3 HDD, some misleading info out there about it supporting 4 but there isn't a place for a 4th bay and I haven't been able to find a good place to mount it outside of a bay (or just lay it there) without blocking air flow significantly. So if you want several drives I would find another option. If it is just for a small home/office server then it might work perfect.

The caddies seem like they're revisions of the older caddies used in the T30's. The T30 caddies click into place but noticed the rubber grommets for the pins that hold the drive in place are slightly different. The older caddies go for maybe $5 or $6 on eBay. Will look into seeing if they can boot off of a m.2 card since the onboard m.2 is disabled.
What's the passmark score on a system like this? Looking to replace an old Xeon e5-2650 system with 32gb of ecc ddr3...
passmark 9800 with 2700 single thread, its a pretty big step up over the old $299 server they have been selling forever. More than enough power for just about anything home use + ECC RAM included. I've heard you have to hack the BIOS if you want to use NVME drives though which is a little disappointing.

You can search for the deals of t40 before. There are many discussions.
But really if you have to ask... its not for you.
Good for Plex

Yes. Either Windows or Linux works
