The advanced security and convenience of Touch ID is built into the MacBook Air. Simply place your finger on the integrated Touch ID sensor and your MacBook Air unlocks. Use your fingerprint to immediately access locked documents, notes, and system settings. You can also use Apple Pay securely during checkout while online shopping. No need to enter shipping or billing info, and your card details are never shared. |
Introducing the Apple T2 chip, a secondâgeneration custom Mac silicon designed by Apple to make MacBook Air even more secure. The Apple T2 chip includes a Secure Enclave coprocessor that provides the foundation for secure boot and encrypted storage capabilities. It also consolidates many discrete controllers, including the system management controller, audio controller, and SSD controller, into one. And the Apple T2 chip brings a familiar voice to MacBook Air - Hey Siri is always ready to open apps, find documents, play music, or answer your questions. |
The MacBook Air features an 8th Gen 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor. It also has 16 of onboard 2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM and a 512GB PCIe-based SSD. |
The keyboard features the butterfly mechanism, which provides four times more key stability than a traditional scissor mechanism, and has greater comfort and responsiveness. And individual LED-backlit keys with an ambient light sensor help you type in low-light environments. |
The Force Touch trackpad lets you interact with your MacBook Air in a variety of ways based on subtle differences in pressure. You have precise control and a uniform response â no matter where you click the trackpad â as well as plenty of room for Multi-Touch gestures, like pinch and zoom. |
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously. Additionally, you can daisy chain up to six devices from a single Thunderbolt 3 port. |
The improved stereo speakers features twice the bass with greater range and has 25 percent more volume than the previous generation. The wider stereo sound creates immersive audio when you're listening to music or watching a movie. |
The front-facing HD camera allows you to FaceTime with friends and family in HD quality for either one-on-one or group calls. The three integrated microphones form an array that can accurately capture your voice for FaceTime calls, as well as dictation and talking to Siri. |
The MacBook Air is the first Mac to be made of 100% recycled aluminum. The aluminum alloy was created by Apple and it delivers the same strength, durability, and finish â without having to mine any new aluminum from the earth for up to 47% lower carbon emissions compared to the previous generation. It's designed to use shavings of recaptured aluminum that are re-engineered down to the atomic level. |

After much Googling and trying various things (e.g., resetting SMC, resetting NVRAM/PRAM), I gave up and did an online chat with B&H. They told me that I would not be charged a restocking fee and would not have to pay for the return shipping, but that if I wanted to get a replacement sent out immediately, I'd need to pay for the replacement now, and wait for the refund of the first one until after they received it. So I went with that option.
I'm not sure if I just got a lemon or if the fact that these are 2018 models that were sitting a really long time (perhaps really bad for the Lithium Ion battery?) is what's to blame. I'm hoping/thinking it's just a lemon, or else they'd get more complaints about it. Wish me luck.
Anyone else have any good/bad news to report on their purchase of this?
I'm still on the fence. It's 2018 and knowing they have potential issues has really kept me away from buying them. My current MacBook Pro 2011 is rock solid. So, it's hard to me to want to touch these with potential keyboard issues. Consider keyboard is the main source of input for a laptop I'm not sure.

So what am I doing? Well, tonight I went to my closest Apple store (about 30 mins away) and they confirmed that either the logic board or battery were defective. Unfortunately, because of the holidays (and, I guess, them being understaffed in people who can do these kinds of repairs), the current turnaround time is 5-7 work days (regardless of whether I left it with them to fix locally, or if they were going to ship it out to wherever to get fixed).
I was pretty pissed, because I really wanted to have this to use over my upcoming holiday break between Xmas and New Years). I decided to take it back, with the plan of complaining to B&H about it and hoping to get them to just give me a complete refund (not another replacement), with my intent being to then order a new MacBook Pro 16 from Adorama. I was previously debating between getting a new MBP 16 and this MBA, and I think I just want to spend more (and get more) with the MBP 16 at this point.
But I do still think that this is a good deal, and if I wasn't torn on wanting the MBP 16, I'd probably begrudgingly just have the Apple store fix it. I do like the lightweight aspect of the MBA, and the 16GB / 512GB combo at $1200-1300 seems like a very good price.
