Doesn't seem like a good idea in 2025, an M4 (not Pro) processor will outperform an M1 Pro in most tasks. Plus, we have to assume that Apple is ending support for these M1 processors in 1-2 years. They might go a little longer than we expect, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

As someone still very happy with an M1 Air, I can see the appeal in this deal. But, if you're trying to spend under $800 for the best Mac you can get, you're probably better off with an M4 Air which has had a bunch of sales down to $750. The base M4 crushes the M1 Pro in single core performance, and even beats it out in multi-core. Of course there are screen, speaker, and IO benefits to the Pro chassis, but to speak generally I stand by my statement M4 Air is better than M1 Pro

Just buy a new M4 air 13 for $750, agreed. Better at most tasks, and waaaay lighter. Worth the extra $. This is a deal at $500 or below.

Now if this had a 32GB configuration, that might make it a good deal in addition to the sound and screen.

This needs to be under $500 with tax for it to be a deal.

this isnt windows... they will support these processors way past 1-2 years from now. M4 to M1 pro chip isnt as huge of a leap as it was intel to m1. M4 in the macbook air does run at a higher clock speed initially but it does get much hotter very quickly and will slow down considerably (like ~1/2 initial speed) having no fans. Also the m1 pro has higher memory bandwidth speeds. For anyone doing sustained professional workloads, I would much rather have the m1 pro over the macbook air m4.
If you are just using a laptop to browse the internet, the m4 macbook air 100% makes way more sense, but you wont notice any speed difference between the 2 with most basic tasks

We don't know about support yet. Apple quietly amended their battery policy to ten years "when supplies permit" on 2016+ computers.

But it's a roll of the dice. Apple historically has given 5-7 years of upgrades with 7 years of security updates on BIOS plus 7-9 years of OS updates.

Is that 5-7yrs os and then 7yrs security? We're on year 10 (11?) of my Surface Pro 4 in service, it's my kids computer now and technically I can upgrade it to win11 and keep it running another few years as it still works for basic web shit and Minecraft. M1 is still so fast that I imagine it could have a similar trajectory long as security updates keep coming.

I have a M3 pro for work (software engineer) and M1 pro for personal. There's 0 difference because Apple made the M chip way too good that the M1 pro is way more than enough for any day to day usage. I have at least 100 Firefox tabs open at a time. Unless you do heavy rendering or gaming I'm not sure why you'd need more compute power than this.

No, Apple overlaps the two. They generally support five years of major OS upgrades, and then the final OS version supported gets security updates for the next two major releases.

So if your machine caps out at macOS 26, you'll generally get security updates on macOS 26 while macOS 27 and macOS 28 are being maintained.

Apple provides parts hardware support for equipment for seven years (except some batteries). The goal is to keep machines current until they stop repairing them.

What we don't know, is if M1+ will change that timetable. I suspect they may go to eight years of OS releases, and then two additional years of security updates.
