I think I paid $60 for a broken piece of crap game (Destiny 2 in case you were wondering) that got worse and worse... then they popped out the first "expansion" and blew up the whole non-purchaser portion of the game. Then a while later it supposedly got good again (Forsaken) so they made the game free to play and started selling the expansions as though they were the actual game.
I think eff bungie and their anti-gamer games and business practices. There are too many other actually good games out there to waste money on this 2+ year old nonsense. Supporting this kind of behaviour will get you more of it. Resist the corporate takeover of gaming!
I've been playing Destiny for years and still enjoy it despite what I'm sure will be a lot of negative comments in this thread.
If you're looking to start or add on to the free to play version, Shadowkeep and the current season pass is well worth it, especially if you plan to play with friends.
If you want the full story or are an in-game collector you'll also want Forsaken. There are a lot of good story beats and weapons in Forsaken, which are worth the extra money in my opinion.
Expect 8-10 hours of story for each expansion. There's also a bunch of weapons and activities to play in each one of the expansions which you can easily burn several hundred hours in if you like the activities. If you don't like something, skip it and do the others.
I wouldn't expect the prices to drop until maybe this fall if they add more content to the free to play version of the game (possibly the Forsaken content). Bungie seems to be shifting to a more regular pricing model after switching to self publishing earlier this year.
Edit:
Expect to pay about $10 per season (quarterly) for the latest content (story, activities, and weapons). The Season of the Dawn runs through March 9th. For more info on the season pass and what you get see Bungie's site here:
My partner and I play Destiny 2 together. Really fun multiplayer game. Definitely one of those where you can just kind of sit back with some Netflix in the background and do some quests. I think it's great, and the new seasonal stuff gives me a good reason to come back week to week.
I'd recommend it if you want an MMO that won't necessarily take over your life. You can get to the end game and succeed in raids without it feeling like a job, which is great for me. This price is solid, and you get a ton of content for it.
If you're unsure, the base game and first year of content is free. The onboarding sucks (they didn't really think that through), but once you start a storyline, you're good to go. And the free portion of the game includes 3 campaigns, multiplayer, a raid, and seasonal stuff.

And for good measure, Fortnite can suck it too.
