I own 2 Vizio TVs, when you turn it on it'll power on to whatever input you were last using. If you are using a firestick, or cable box plugged into hdmi 1 that is what it'll go to. It will not automatically power up to the smart cast screen where all of the apps reside unless it's the last thing you used. And even then, it isn't littered with ads. It has recommended movies and shows to watch from apps you have installed and then an app row. It is not overly obtrusive in any way.

Hmmm I have last years P series as our main TV and looking for a new bedroom TV kinda temped by this but know it's not as good as the 558 with many more dimming zones but since it's only a bedroom TV wonder if I should go for the 556 and save some money can anyone comment on the 558 vs the 556 and just how different they are?

For this type of TV, a "smart" TV - if you keep it offline and do not use the services, do you still have to blast through a minefield of menus each time you turn the thing on?

use your own streaming device, it should be better.

never hook your TV up to wifi unless you need to update or something specific

Well, that's definitely the plan. But does the TV interface continually try to steer you toward using those services? Can those menus I see on images of the TVs on the websites that show all the tiles for Netflix, etc - can that be disabled?

Can't think of any TVs that can disable it. It's honestly not that bad.

Heh. It wouldn't surprise me if that were true for most everyone. But me, well, let's put it this way - I bought a Fire tablet with lock screen ads and found it intolerable.

I get that those menus are in part why you can now buy so much TV for so relatively little money. And it seems as though the non-smart TV models are relegated to lower end brands and specs. I would love to just leave the thing offline and enjoy it however the manufacturer decides I should even if that includes unnecessarily wading through options I have no intention of using. Maybe I'll get there, but the best outcome would be yeah, you can disable all of that.

Or maybe it's like a hotel TV where for all the interface features that get blasted your way on power-up, all you have to do is (first find, then) select the TV option and all the other stuff goes away. I could probably live with that...

Agreed and they came up there in certain order like Netflix etc has no other partners as such. It is based on performance. Not sure why would you want to pay for smart and then disable it?

The smart tv option is not an "extra" like a leather interior; you don't pay more for a TV that has it; you pay less. TVs without the smart TV interface tend to be lower brands and lower specs, so you get less for your money.
