For people that have access to smartphone all the time and likely won't be carry your planner much, it is obviously you don't need planner and much better to use Calendar app.
And for family that need to share their school/after school/weekend schedule/event and/or doctor/dentist appt time with each other, etc, it is better to use online Calendar.
And more and more company, school and even small business are switching to use cloud tools and family are adding smart device like Amazon Echo and Google Home, everything is now available online. So less and less people need planner. May be for people work in places or study in schools that don't allow them to access smart device may need planner.
