That auger is an awesome tool for digging holes for posts. My dad and I built a 6 ft. "dog ear" cedar picket fence this past summer around our backyard with ease. We dug 3 feet down easily, the auger will bog down in little depending on your soil, which varies in different regions (mines mid-west, mostly dirt, clay).
Now I would say if you have roots that exceed over 1 in. in diameter, the auger will not chug through it well, and you might need to manually cut roots that thick. In that regard, it is slightly under powered because I had to deal with trees 3 in. roots that were in the path of the fence and posts. Overall it is a great little auger, relatively lightweight and easy to use. Better than renting one, in my area $100 for 1 day! I would recommend this.
In my experience unless it's an implement aka skid steer or tractor running it off a 3pt hitch it will have problems with roots bigger than an inch or so.
The force it takes to RIP out the root would send the poor people holding it flying would be my guess.
