Select Lowe's[lowes.com] locations have the 18-Gallon Bella Storage Solution Purple Tote w/ Matching Lid on clearance for as low as $2.39. Free store pickup. This is a high YMMV deal.
I bought over a 100 of these Bella 72qt. (18gal) totes from Office Depot, a year and a half ago for $2 a piece. They're just slightly thicker than milk jug plastic. I bought them instead of cardboard boxes for a house move, and they served their purpose, but by no means would I buy these to keep anything important in.
About a quarter of our lids cracked during the move, and that's with only one or two totes being stacked on top. None of the lids ever sealed securely, they pretty much just loosely cover the tote. These totes are slightly better than cardboard boxes, but don't buy these thinking you're going to preserve your stuff from pests, water, or the environment.

The totes I bought were black, not purple. Maybe these purple ones are built with more robust plastic, but I doubt it.
I bought a bunch of these recently...and they are not that weak as you describe. However, these are far from heavy duty...I could see how a move where you fling around bins could damage them. I did have one crack as I carried a bunch to the car when holding it lengthwise instead of by the handles. They are made so that if you properly close the lid the handles reinforce quite decently.
Also, the lids wrap around the thickest part (the top rim) so that stacking shouldn't be a problem unless you're overloading with weight. Keep it minimal and I could see these being stacked at least 3-4 bins high. I currently have some computer cables and parts in a few and they are stacked 3 bins high. I feel like they did consider that people would stack them—however, with nothing too heavy inside.
I'm surprised this deal still exists...the last time I found out I headed there that night. My Loews had at least 50-60 in stock (I counted). After buying only 5 and regretting not getting more: the next morning all but 1 broken one were cleared out.
They're still 6.56 in my area...which are actually only 2.44 less than they were on last weeks sale (they had a few shades of blue)....so I'll pass, but great deal for those who can get it for <$2.50
