Keep in mind when buying that the Detective Pikachu set are 4 card booster packs, not 10-11 cards like a typical booster pack.
A better value as of today is to get this set from amazon for 11.99. Basically double this set but with the extra Mewtwo and jumbo card

1 foil oversize card featuring a Pokémon-GX
4 Pokémon TCG: detective Pikachu booster packs
2 additional Pokémon TCG booster packs

Yeah, but they are all foil cards. And there are only 18 cards in the set. Each pack has a 'rare' card and it takes quite a few packs to get all the rares collected. My son is obsessed with the det pikachu packs. This price has been 5.99 on amazon for quite a while and still is.

Also note, despite the description on both Walmart and Amazon saying that it includes a 4-pocket binder, several reviewers stated that it didn't include the binder. I kind of wish I would have seen that before ordering.

Right, I'm just giving people realistic expectations about what the set will contain. It's not a well loved set amongst most collectors or players because of the small boosters, lack of many competitively playable cards, etc.

Does your son actually play the game with them? My nephew just like compares with friends but wasn't so impressed with the original series cards I gave him

He plays the actual card game with his regular decks. With these he just collects them and organizes them in a binder. We have one complete set now and he's missing 2 or 3 of the rares for a second set.

So for this particular set he just collects but he is still obsessed with completing more sets. I have bought quite a few of these various combinations and both of these deals are about as good as it gets to get the det pikachu packs ($3/each), the extra booster packs are just a bonus to him.

I appreciated your comment. as someone who had no idea, I read the OP as 11 cards per pack and your comment enlightened me.

A bit off topic, but my 9 year old has recently gotten into Pokemon. Any advice on the best value way to build his collection? At this point he is mostly collecting, but he does want to start actually playing with some of his friends.

Buy premade decks to learn the game first. Much easier than explaining to a kid how to build their own deck with enough energy and support cards. Once they get the hang of the game they can branch out to building their own. But packs in my opinion are just for collecting cards and looking for cool ones while decks are better for gameplay.

I was you just a few weeks ago.

From my experience, it is good to play the online Pokemon TCG game to get the hang of it. Then buy one of the "Let's Play " pack that have two of the 60 card theme decks.

I agree with the comments about playing the online game to help learn, but in addition to new cards, you should check card stores in your area. Some will sell cards for TCGPLAYER value, while others might offer common and uncommons for a set price .05-.25 per card. We've got a lot of cards this way.
