good find thanks. i was looking for a replacement because the hardshell cracked. this seems to prevent that issue with lower cost!

How do you tell which generation of 12.9"? 2018 is the release date of 3rd gen but it doesn't have a home button like in the picture.

I have exactly the same concern. But based on reviews, I think the case is designed for the latest 3rd gen with FaceID/without home button (which is the model I own). If you look at the "compare items" section it does show an iPad without the home button, and reviews for the 12.9" version mention the magnetic pencil. Still, it's kind of a gamble...but then again, it's only $3.59 (with the standard Amazon return policy). I think I'm going to take the risk. Worst case - back it goes

I'm taking a gamble, too. Need 1st Gen but can also use 3rd gen. Thanks for the sleuth work.
