Thanks OP. About 3 years ago I bought a decent metal detector as an intended Xmas gift for one of my sons. Since Christmas was months away, I hid it somewhere in my home. I haven't been able to find the damn thing ever since.

Geez, that sounds almost like a Ripley's Believe It Or Not tale.

Really I don't find this hard to believe. The number of things I've put away in my house for safe keeping and then couldn't find them when I needed them grows every year.

This is a decent kids metal detector to let them putter around in the yard and see if they're really interested in picking up the hobby, but not something for beach use or any "real" hunting.

Price isn't bad though...although you can get a slightly better one at Hobby Lobby. The Tracker IV is 79.99, but there's a 40% off coupon on their webpage which drops the price down to 48 bucks

What's a better one under or around $100 for beach and campgrounds? I'll even buy used just dont know which one is good. And how do I know it still works if I do buy it used?

Tesoro Compadre. My personal favorite. It's not the best detector, but it's definitely the best bang for buck. New they were $150 to $170. Used they go for around $100 (though I havent shopped for them in a while). I have 3 right now, and one of them I scored for $65 off of a for sale forum.

It looks like the compadre isnt available anymore..last time I saw one for sale it was from a detector shop and that was months ago. I believe Tesoro has closed their doors.

There are many detector forums with classifieds. The forums are a wealth of info.

The Garret Ace 150 or 250 is also a very cheap detector that works well and can be had used for near $100. I much prefer a Tesoro for many reasons.

In response to your not knowing if they still work: I've probably traded (including ebay) over 50 used detectors and out of that I can only remember 2 that I promptly returned. They worked, but had damage that wasnt disclosed (scratched screens and broken plastic).

If you're truly interested in the hobby find a detector store...they do exist. The hobby is bigger than you'd think and there is an incredible amount of detectors out there. Many places have demos.
