I suspect JohnnyHot is right. It's been similar to this price at other times (when I bought it). It lacks, for those who care, key DLC if you want all of what Civ VI has to offer; though the base game has plenty to occupy your time.

FWIW, I have both this and the iPad version (paid $5 for it) and find myself gravitating to play on the iPad because the screen is so much larger. Still perfectly playable on the Switch in my experience, and a fun game (fairly different from Civ V) and can easily destroy your life with "Just One More Turn" (I played 15 glorious straight hours of it during Christmas vacation because i wasn't tethered to my gaming PC to play it like in prior versions).

If you don't get it at this price it'll come back around quickly. People who think this won't be the standard price going forward haven't been paying attention. They'll make the money off of dlc.

No, this is a turnbase strategy, age of empires is realtime. Civ is an amazing series though, check it out if your into history-strategy games. It just plays more like chess + city builder / management. You still go to war, make alliances, trade, expand, build, conquer, etc. Well worth for 20 bucks!

FWIW, I've only had some experience in the early game and it has no framerate issues I've noticed. However, typically I think that if/when there are framerate issues, it's in the late game when there's lots of cities and units. There's not much of that in the iPad version late game but not so much to really even be distracting. Just lots of units moving around and the computer civs making moves/decisions. Also I might defer to the more technical folks here, but AFAIK Civ relies much more on the CPU than a gaming card for running the game.

It is fine for the first few hours of a single game. It can get annoying later on but really you just end up waiting 10 more seconds between turns. It shouldn't really effect your ability to play it but will make it a slightly slower experience. I still say for portable civilization it's worth it.

I used to play the revolution series on Vita and this blows that away.

How did you get it for $5 on iPad? It shows up as $20 on the App Store for me.

I think I got it for $10 before XMAS, it wasn't as cheap as $5 and wasn't $20. Guessing the price just regularly changes.
