Alaska Airlines is having a promotion where the brighter the aurora borealis is, the higher the savings on flights to Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska. Savings start from 15%, up to 35%. See link below for specific details.

Here's how it works:
  • In the booking form on this page [alaskaair.com], enter a departure city in the lower 48 states, and a destination of either Anchorage (ANC) or Fairbanks (FAI).
  • Add departure and return dates between January 13 – February 12, 2020 and select the number of travelers.
  • Make sure that the discount code BOREALIS is appearing in the discount code field, and then click "Find flights" to start saving.

Get up to 35% off airfare between Alaska Airlines cities in the lower 48 United States and Anchorage or Fairbanks. Discount level is set based on the highest Kp level in the current University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute 27 day aurora forecast for Alaska. Forecast updates every Monday at 4AM PT. Kp levels of 1-3 will trigger a 15% discount, Kp levels of 4-5 will trigger a 20% discount, Kp levels on 6-7 will trigger a 30% discount, and Kp levels of 8-9 will trigger a 35% discount. Travel is valid from January 13, through February 12, 2020. Valid for new ticket purchases only. Discount code must be applied towards purchase of ticket by 11:59pm (PT) on January 17, 2020. Discount does not apply to government imposed taxes and airport fees. Cannot be combined with other promotions.

northern lights peak according to 11 year solar cycles. 2025 is the next best year to catch Northern lights, which means 2020 is the worst year. No wonder Airlines are desperate

It is very cold in Fairbanks Jan/Feb and not much daylight—doesn't attract travelers. Aurora has been pretty amazing lately. It is much warmer in March and longer daylight hours.
