There are pros and cons on this. FireTV recast does not allow you to save the file in other format or other purpose. You can only play back the recordings on the app or FireTV. It is only 720p but it is mostly fine for OTA TV programs. One advantage of this is that one can access the OTA TV program or recording through the FireTV app even if you are away from home. For that function, the lower resolution actually helps as it does not transcode. Nevertheless, there is no PC/Mac support unless you use an Android simulator.
I bought this on BF from Amazon for $129 for the 2 tuner
Works great for me. I have a great antenna setup with a pre amp.
Pick up 30 stations from over 40 miles away with high mountains.
The only thing I would do different would be I would buy the 4 tuner.
Many times I find myself recording a TV show and only have one tuner available, so the wife gets a bit upset.
I added a 2T hard drive to mine and I think I have about 400 + hours of DVR total
Love the way it works with the Fire TV and Fire sticks
ATSC 1.0 has to continue to air for 5-7 yrs after 3.0 starts

I've heard pple complain about the 720 p.
Right now we got TiVo but I don't want to spring the $350+ a TiVo mini ($180) for the basement for when my Roamio dies.

Anyone move from a TiVo Roamio over to this and be happy with the switch? Lookin for feedback from the community. Thanks!

Can someone do a "ELI5"-type breakdown of this for me? As in, in which setup or situation does one get this product? Are there many other components or things I'd need to have in order to get it streaming and working to its fullest potential? And last (dumb and uneducated) question - why not just have a Roku, or is this not really for streaming video and the such?

I bought one on prime day and it's great. It's very easy to use especially if you already have fire tv products.

Use it for over the air streaming to your TVs and dvr and TV guide for those OTA channels if you have firetv plugged into a tv you can put this with antenna in another area and stream if to that tv.

You need a FireTV to use this. It is not or streaming any files other than recordings made on it or live broadcasting. The main selling point is the no fee recording and that is accessible on the road through the FireTV app. I have the HDHomeRun Duo and I still get the 2 tuners Recast to add more tuners on the network and other functions.
