There are many different ways to control fan speed, older fans use high-voltage control while all of the new models use low-voltage controls. It would be challenging to accommodate both types and not possible to make the fan switch compatible with exhaust fans at the same time. So there's no simple way to provide 3 speed control these days, especially that most of the new fans have 6-7 settings for speed.
Since we wanted to make this device more universal, as a simple replacement for existing double switches, in the bedroom (ceiling fan / light), kitchen (2 lights), or bathroom (exhaust fan / light), we needed to compromise on some of the functionality. But we'll keep trying to fit it all in and make it easy to use (and affordable)!

The ZEN27 is a newer model but the ZEN22 was since upgraded to new software so in terms of Z-Wave / wireless functionality they're very similar. The main differences are in the hardware.
Both dimmers will work great as single pole switches (one switch controlling one light) and both always require a neutral wire.

3-WAY INSTALLATION (2 SWITCHES CONTROLLING THE SAME LIGHT): both models have to be used with regular on/off 3-way switches (you can't connect them directly to other dimmers or any type of electronic or smart switches, just simple mechanical switches). When using ZEN22 you will need to rewire both boxes according to the appropriate diagram from the manual but sometimes you'll get an option to choose which box you can install the ZEN22 in. With ZEN27, you only replace the switch with direct connection to power and leave the other one alone (unless it's a dimmer or some kind of electronic switch in which case you need to replace it with a simple switch). The downside of using the ZEN27 dimmer is that you won't get to choose which box it's installed it, it can always be installed in just one of the boxes.
4-WAY INSTALLATION (3 SWITCHES CONTROLLING THE SAME LIGHT): for 4-way and 5-way installations we recommend going with the ZEN27 dimmer since the ZEN22 will not be able to accommodate the most common 4-way and 5-way configurations. Again, just like with 3-ways, you'll only need to replace the main switch (with direct access to power) with the ZEN27, leaving the other ones alone. You'll have dimming capability directly from the ZEN27 dimmer and through your SmartThings app or voice control while the other switches will always turn the light back to the last brightness setting. BUT with the latest firmware on the ZEN22, you can use it with the momentary ZAC99 switch in any type of 4-way or 5-way installation and get dimming control from each location. Contact our support for more details on that.
ELECTRICAL RATING: The ZEN22 can handle up to 150 W of LED with both sides of heatsink tabs on while the ZEN27 can only handle up to a 100 W. That rating goes down by around 30-40% depending on the drivers used in your LED bulbs if you need to remove both sides of the heatsink tabs to fit the switches side by side in the same gang box. In general, we recommend using ZEN22 for single pole installations and anywhere you have more than 6 LED bulbs controlled by the switch.
LED BULBS: Please make sure you choose high-quality dimmable bulbs to use with your smart dimmers. Some bulbs have more sensitive drivers that may cause flickering when used with selected dimmers but between the ZEN22 and ZEN27 you should be able to find a solution since each uses a different dimming component that will accommodate more selective bulbs. Smart bulbs cannot be directly dimmed or controlled by smart switches but there's a "smart" way to do it via Z-Wave and if you need instructions for this type of set-up, please let us know and we'll guide you through it.

The difference between ZEN21 and ZEN26 will be primarily in 3-way/4-way wiring as described above and in electrical rating (15 A for the ZEN21 and 8 A for the ZEN26). We don't recommend using any of the switches with switched receptacles or tube lights (you can use the relay part of the ZEN30 Double switch for that).

All of the models shipping today support scene control (double tap, 3-tap, 4-tap and press-and-hold for each paddle). Just make sure your hub supports this functionality.

A custom handler is needed since this is a 2-in-1 device and ST takes a long time to integrate this type of devices. Installing the handler is a simple process and it takes 5 minutes, we have detailed instructions posted here [getzooz.com].

wtf - the fan only goes on/off? Why did they finally takes 5 yrs to make this exist and then not put in a simple way to control 3 speeds?

Nope, unfortunately it only controls on and off. I keep hoping for the same thing but I just gone with the Bond https://bondhome.io/ to deal with this as my fans already had remote controls. Just have to make sure that the switch is on all the time.

I assume this is related to the amount of space in the box and how to dissipate the heat and still have space for the controls. Someone with more electrical background is going to have to answer this for sure.

I hope the ZEN30 works with smartthings without a custom handler.
The speed thing isn't a big deal for me. I think I've changed the speed of my fan maybe twice in 3 years
