Just checking different carriers for deals earlier and saw this on Metro website:
"Switch and get an iPhone 7 for $49.99. Then add a second line
and get another iPhone 7 on us. Plus sales tax and activation fee.
ID validation required."
Depending on the store and how they allow you to stack the discount, it will cost you $170+tax in the worst case scenario for 2 iPhone 7s.
$90 for 2 lines + $30 activation fees + $49.99 for 1 phone + 2nd phone for free = $169.99
If they allow you to go with the $80 for 2 lines plan or if the 2 lines for $65 is applicable, it will bring the price even lower to $160 or $145. If everything works out, it seems like a pretty good iPhone 7 deal.
(Not sure if it is still the case, but Metro phones are carrier locked initially but they used to automatically unlock after 6 months)

$169 is for 2 phones not 1. Please correct.

Though not sure, if they have changed the rules now.

I have not ever owned an iPhone. I currently have a Pixel 2 XL (and my wife has a Pixel 2), how much of a downgrade would this phone be?

Your other option is buy the iPhones and sell them, activating the service afterwards on your Pixels.
