Speed is not generally the reason people take a train. Sometimes it's nice to look out the window, have a drink and a meal. It can feel a bit more civilized and be less draining than driving long distances. I've done a lot of travel by train in Europe, but almost none here. Maybe it's time.

FYI coach means meals are not included and no sleeper. If you're planning a trip like Empire Builder then you're looking at 40-ish hours with only observation car and a seat to sleep in. If your train is packed, that can be miserable. Otherwise pretty slick deal for summer travel.

No matter what I do, I cannot get any of these discounted prices. There is no place to input a promo code.

This is legit the reason why I never, ever, use Amtrak. Every single time I try to do anything on their website, it never works. Prices never reflect what they advertise, promo code boxes missing, no explanations. Such crap.

Update: apparently only works for the lower class seats, despite saying right there " Offer valid for all reserved services, except Auto Train. "

FYI, you should still be able to get the B1G1 on the 'coach portion' of the fare even if you select a sleeper compartment upgrade.


altho I didn't get V214 to work for me.

Just in case it helps anyone,

This discount is never applied to the "Saver" fare. It applies to "Value" and "Flexible". They have a little green bar with Promo Applied underneath.
