Here is a counter point. I know a lot of people here think 16GB isn't enough but you need to understand that unless you're really into Photo/Video editing or doing a lot of gaming (not sure why you're buying a Mac for gaming in the first place), it isn't necessary.
I am a developer and I have been using a 2015 16GB Mac for nearly 5 years now. I am a heavy user of Xcode, Docker and use IntelliJ which is a memory hog along with Chrome with more than 20 tabs open in most cases. There are very few rare occasions where I feel the RAM is slowing me down and here are the 2 main reasons why:
1) Mac OS like iOS is really efficient at Memory management. Apple does a really good job at it and like phone world where you can see Android phones having nearly 12-16GB of RAM, an iPhone with 3-4 GB of RAM still is faster. Similar is the case with Windows vs Mac.
2) The RAMs on Macs are the fastest you'll get on a laptop. The ones on the latest one run at 2.6GHz clock speed. My old Mac has ones running at 2.1GHz and they still seem fast. Faster RAM means in case you fill up that 16GB, the OS will take less time swapping thereby you never will feel the slowdown traditionally seen due to the lack of RAM. Not to mention, these also have the fastest SSD in the market so if they want to use 'virtual memory', it will be using a real fast memory.
Overall, if you're on the fence, I would recommend saving your money and going for the base variant unless you're really a high end photographer/video editor. Anyone else including developers won't be disappointed with 16GB. It will easily last 5 years no problem.
I don't think you'll want to get 16GB if you want to use this for 5 years. I've been eyeing the 16-inch and ever since I've been really aware of my memory usage on my 2016 13-inch Pro (with 16GB). More often than I previously realized, if I have large files open in Photoshop, Lightroom, and Word/Excel I'm maxing out the 16GB. My biggest issue is just that the 32gb aren't sold in stores and ordering through Apple takes a month. I'm planning on getting the base model (512GB SSD) with 32GB RAM. I have a 1TB SSD now but if you can only get one thing I'd get the 32GB vs. the 1TB SSD.
16gb is good enough for most people. Unless you're running After Effects or a ton of Adobe programs, you should be fine. The other thing to remember is that the SSD speeds on this computer are so fast, even swapping on this computer doesn't drag the performance down like the days of a physical hard disk. I'm still running a 2014/15 laptop that I edit videos regularly without any issues.

Thanks for posting Op. Is this a reputable seller? Anyone have experience buying from them?
Also anyone have a recommendation on whether 16GB RAM would be enough if you intend to have the computer for at least 5 years? Wouldn't be used for professional use right now, but I know RAM isn't upgradeable so considering getting 32GB.
You mean, is this the one with the old keyboard that replaced the new butterfly keyboard.
just installed their old keyboard system that actually worked into their new laptops and are advertising it as a new keyboard.

Photo editing, video editing, 3D graphics, computer games etc. if you plan to use any of the above on a regularly I'd but at least 32gb.
I have an old MPB (late 2008) that I still enjoy playing with with it only has 8gb ram and I can still run BLENDER & PS (older version) however rendering is much slower along with general usage.
