Inkjets are not good for occasional use. The printheads dry up and become clogged. For everyday use, they are not that great either. You will spend more in the long run for inks for that MFC-J497DW. If you need color or an inkjet, I would not get this model.

If you need a basic b/w laser printer, this is a good deal. Unlike the 90 model, it has an ethernet port, touch screen, and scan to the cloud features.

If you need a model with an automatic document feeder, Brother has that too. You can see if the difference is worth it for your needs.
A few weeks ago I compared this to the 2390 and I scribbled down a few notes for my own reference, but they may help someone, or at least give you an idea what to look for.
HL2395dw over HL2390dw: Ethernet, Touchscreen, 128gb memory (over 64gb), Scan to: Word, excel, powerpoint, office, email. Cloud services: Dropbox, Google drive, One-note.
The main difference is that the 2395 model has an ethernet adapter if you want to run a cable to your router. But both have USB and WiFi. The 2395 has touch screen controls while the 2390 does not. 2395 supports some scan to cloud features (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive). Might be convenient and useful if you use those. 2395 prints up to 36 ppm while the 2390 prints up to 32 ppm which is not that drastic / minimal. Also, 2395 has double the RAM Memory than that of the 2390: 128MB vs 64MB.

Just bought the 2390 the other day. Haven't opened it yet, decided to get this one instead since it was within $10 difference.

been waiting for this price range to come back but now that I have the price I am on the fence because that thing is bigger than I thought and may be a challenge to fit in my office without putting it on the floor Smilie I am a low volume printer (less than 20 pp month) and am considering the cheap MFC-J497DW. What are your thoughts? do I need to jump to the laser bandwagon and pass on size, ADF and color? thanks!

This is color printing? Also, doesn't have document feeding for scanning, correct?

Are the scanners on these brother laser printers of decent quality? Or am I better off buying a dedicated scanner?

Scanner is sufficient but note that it's a flatbed and does NOT have an automatic document feeder (ADF). This means that you're stuck scanning one page at a time. Great for occasional uses; inefficient if needed on daily basis.

I keep the printer in the Garage. It has an Ethernet port.
