I was a bit misled by the title because the "and animals" made me think it had some of the Lego animal minifigs (dogs, cats, rabbits, bears, dolphins, etc) which are actually very cool and many people seek those out in sets. This is of course just basic bricks and i guess it comes with instructions to build little simple animals. As I said still a great set to entertain kids and also a lot of bricks for the $$.

How old are you? I feel like Legos used to only be these sets. Now they mostly sell them in pre set units for specific designs.

I believe they meant to say "Amazon pricematched the baseplate price," as Amazon is currently offering $3 slow shipping credit for various baseplates. I picked up one of the new white baseplates and received the same offer.
The set appears to include smaller pieces which limits creativity, but definitely great value to for detailing larger builds.
