Watch out if you have a relatively newer house. The floor joists under the second story usually use engineered I beams instead of 2x6 or 2x10. You can safely hang these shelves on 2x10s, but I beams will be sketchy.

I'm not familiar with I-beams, do you know how much it changes the weight rating by? I don't need to hold much, just want to prevent my cases of toilet paper from getting wet. Thanks!

I'd do it for < $100 for the 2 sets just because it looks good. But if you're going to do it yourself, you may as well go to Home Depot and do it with grills or wood for a lot less money.

Not sure why do I need it, we have a whole basement for storage.
Not everyone has basements unfortunately. I live in Arizona and the majority of the houses do not have basements. I bought these last time and they are extremely well built. I would buy more in a heartbeat if I needed more storage space.

Love these installed them myself haven't done many DIY projects before. It took 2 hours for each set. Don't put a time limit on installing these make it a fun project. My thought process is there is no time limit for DIY projects.I have done it alone except for marking the distance needed help. I have used bathing soap and dish soap as lubricant for the nuts you can install them slowly don't have to install in one shot. Take a break give it few mins and drive the bolts. I bought magnetic driver set that didn't work properly instead the 30 dollar set I got at Costco worked perfectly. The magnetic driver set slipped constantly while driving the niut. After you install use you weight as test weight and hang your self from the ends.

Could I 'split' these with someone? Do they have all the necessary parts/hardware to install independently of each other?

Good deal. You save over $100 with this over buying individually. Bought one for $172 shipped when it went on sale.

How do I check what type of floor joists my house has (I-beams, or 2x6 or 2x10)? What type of load test is recommended after installing these shelves?

Yes, it came in two separate sets. I installed the two set separately, so you can use one and split/sell the second. Hope this help!
