I'm guessing because not as many people are driving and traveling right now, they are hurting for memberships.

Most cars come with roadside assistance from the manufacturer, and most insurers have roadside assistance available for a very minimal fee (under $10/six-months). So what's the purpose of AAA these days?
Most people on SD don't buy new cars. I have credit cards with towing and roadside. AAA gives longer range towing and for what it's worth these days, hotel discounts and stuff like that.

Benefits may be state to state, but here are benefits for California...

FYI (At least for my regional AAA group) you literally cannot turn off auto-renew without talking to multiple people ON THE PHONE which takes like 25 minutes. No way to do it on their website. EXTREMELY predatory practice IMO.

I think Geico charges me $3/car per month. It has saved me many times. But I have 4 cars now, so thats $12/month or $144 per year which is more than AAA.

AAA Plus offers 4 tows of up to 100 miles, AAA Premier offers 3 tows of up to 100 miles, and one tow of up to 200 miles. Try that with your factory roadside assistance or car insurance plan and let me know how it works out for you (hint: coverage is only to the nearest repair shop or up to 15 miles, then $4-5/mi after that). You can also add on an RV or motorcycle for only like $40/yr for those same coverages, and you get 4 additional service calls permitted. The member is covered in whatever car they're in, not just their own.

Keep in mind too that AAA has DMV services (so you don't have to step foot in that God forsaken place), travel agent services, discounts at retailers nationwide, and more included in the membership.

I've been a long time member and the towing alone is worth it as I've had to have been towed some pretty far distances. Recently got a blowout on the way home to San Diego from Vegas and with my new Honda Civic it only comes with a can of fix-a-flat, no spare. Rather than get towed to the nearest CLOSED service shop in BFE (this was at like 10pm), I was was able to have the car towed all the way home. That alone would have been like a $500 tow. I guess it depends on your driving distance habits among other things, but I feel that it's good peace of mind and don't mind paying a few extra dollars compared to just having Geico roadside assistance.

I went into my Geico coverage and got a quote to add "Emergency Road Service", and my quotes over the 6-month policy period:
  • 2019 Truck: $1.89
  • 2019 Hatchback: $1.89
  • 2013 Sedan: $4.29
  • 2005 SUV: $5.89

Geico tows to the nearest dealer. I own two Mitsubishi 3000GTs, which means that they will tow me hundreds of miles... haha.

Did anyone find a working link?
