This is a good deal, but if you're putting it in a garage semi-permanently, a few critiques from a 734 owner who just broke his planer:
- The tables are useless if you don't need mobility. Rip a sheet of melamine 13" wide and as long as you can and put it 'through' the planer on the bottom. This results in a a longer, flatter plane and will eliminate 'snipe' of the board as it enters. The stock tables encourage snipe at the tips, even when properly adjusted. Normally, this is fine as you just cut an inch off the front and back edges of the board and throw the sniped part in the trash.
- The included stand isn't useless, but it's close. If you're going to have an up-right stand and you're tight on space, built a flip-top cart (check YT for how-tos) with a drawer in the bottom. If you have tons of space, put it on a long table where the melamine can rest, or build it into a miter station. Otherwise, just store it out of the way when not in use. I've also seen guys mount these on miter stands, using the rollers for infeed/outfeed. Takes up a lot of room when folded, though.
- Make sure you have a substantial dust collector. This is the biggest waste-producing tool in the shop, and even large shop-vacs will fill up quick. My 734 will fill a full dust-collector bag shaving 1/2" off a 2x12x8 ft board. Using without dust collection? Hope you know how to swim in sawdust!
I'd wait for a deal just on the planer/knives, or the common planer-only deal under 500 bucks. Still a good deal with a lot of extras if you've just got to have the stand/extension tables.
I have had ZERO snipe on the 735 with the factory tables and did no adjustment.
In fact, a lot of YouTube videos that I watched prior to purchasing made a note that the tables weren't "flat" out if the box. Some of them complained about this fact and tried to adjust them.
They aren't supposed to be dead flat with the bed of the planer. In fact, Dewalt states that they are adjusted from the factory and not to adjust.
I really like the stand, it's super sturdy when stationary or rolling it. Building your own is certainly an option, and I like the idea of creating a longer bed.
Not to discount your experience with the 734...just speaking from the 735 here.
Yeah the market for used tools is not happening like I thought it would. I broke down and ordered a table saw from Amazon yesterday. I've been tracking craigslist and Facebook for weeks here in Chicago and really haven't seen anything better.
I hear you on that. It definitely depends on your location. I can find tons of great deals 200 miles away. Even with gas prices this low, it doesn't make sense to drive that far.

I see posts online all the time about the crazy deals people get on tools. I'm in the Boston area and woodworking tools are really hard to find for some reason. Either people aren't upgrading or clearing out their garages/basement. Or it could be that deals get snapped up immediately.
I wish I could find a used one for <$400. I'd be throwing in a helical cutter head anyway so I only really need the motor and housing in good condition.
There is a new jet planer that comes in retail around 700, and comes with helical blades, I have the dw375x (with stock blades, and love it more than ever!) but simple advice was given to me at my local wood dealer. He said I would be able to sell the Dewalt used for 300+ and buy the jet. It is a wonderful planer and the retail price would be cheaper now than purchasing the helical blades for the Dewalt upgrade. Don't forget, this helical upgrade also takes away an inch or so on max board width with the Dewalt.
That said, I got much less cavalier about upgrading my Dewalt and will continue to love it for what it is, an incredible planer 👍
Disclaimer: dude at store is a friend, not a hustler, and knew I wouldn't buy from him, especially retail, so that may be something to look into if you want helical but don't already own this awesome Dewalt

Same problem here in the mid Atlantic. Best "deal" I could find used was a 20 year old 12" Delta planer for $300. That was probably the original purchase price 20 years ago.
It is very hard to find any tools in decent condition for less than 80% to 90% of their original price. Some guy had a Dewalt DW734 opened box used for $429. Its $449 brand new in store.

FWIW the last recession I had to sell off almost all of my tools. I was certain I priced them all too high but most were gone within days; some within hours.
In case anybody is interested, direct tool outlet factory still has the Ridgid planer for $319. Lifetime warranty agreement applies. For half the price of this Dewalt in and lifetime warranty, it's a great option for beginning woodworker. It's definitely not as good as 735 but it's not half as good.

"Good enough for who it's for" anyway
