OK...what am I missing? Aren't these just your run of the mill Chinese batteries?

Unknown brand most likely Chinese made. From reviews I've seen by Project farm on youtube, Japanese batteries are the best, while Chinese one perform the worst, that includes battery drain and keeping the charge for months to a year.

These recent years, I've noticed the price gap between quality brands and Chinese off brands, has really narrowed, while the quality difference has remained the same. (and I am not racist before you say that, this has nothing to do with Chinese people)

ya. these would have cost about $2-3 a few years ago, but now they're "competitively priced" in the American market, whilst retaining the same old Chinese technology.
Whether Chinese tech is good or bad, that's for you to figure out.

China made stuff isn't going to be dirt cheap forever.

but the quality is going to be crappy forever.

Dunno why people are downvoting you. This is already the case in guitars. As Fender has opened facilities elsewhere to take advantage of lower labor costs, the MSRP / quality of their Chinese-made models has increased.

I imagine something similar is true for other things as well.

This is not a true generalization. Look at a brand like ANKER, who was once just a random chinese brand. There are examples across industries if you are receptive to them.

More than 99 out of 100 Chinese brands don't give a crap about quality control. they find the cheapest raw materials and use the cheapest labor, and the end goal is to get something out that just works at the lowest cost, and doesn't look too sketchy. They just want to maximize profit as a get rich quick scheme, and don't give a crap about customer retention.

exactly. Anker has been the exception, certainly not the rule
