I am in the Grandfathered 5-line plan and I know that if I upgraded it would cause me to lose the plan.
I want to know if instead, I buy this as a new line phone, and then put in my existing sim and go on using it without losing my plan.

It should work with any cricket Sim. I don't think it is tied to a particular number/Sim. You can get a new plan/number and ditch it.
