I believe Cricket won't unlock it until after 6 months of service.

the iphone 8 is the most forgotten in apple's history. It was the newest iphone for only 15 mins and the iphone se demolished anything it had going on after it was released.

Would this work if I put in an existing Cricket sim?

I am in the Grandfathered 5-line plan and I know that if I upgraded it would cause me to lose the plan.

I want to know if instead, I buy this as a new line phone, and then put in my existing sim and go on using it without losing my plan.

It should work with any cricket Sim. I don't think it is tied to a particular number/Sim. You can get a new plan/number and ditch it.

I've switched Sims between different locked cricket phones in the past and they all worked.

I recently bought an iPhone 7S as an upgrade for one of my lines on an older grandfathered 5 line plan. I was charged the $35 upgrade fee, but it did not change my monthly amount due. This was the first part of April and I have had 2 billings since then and it shows my next one will still be at $100. It would probably not count as changing your plan, but you are at all worried I would go the way you were thinking and you shouldn't have a problem swapping out the SIM card. I don't know if I got lucky or if it doesn't count a phone upgrade as a plan change.

I realize this has a bigger screen, but with the SE coming out I thought iPhone 8 would drop more in price.

I've been told no. Locked MVNO phone cannot work on its legacy's network. However, it'll work the other way around (e.g. locked AT&T phone will work on Cricket).
