Shemue is really what made the Dreamcast...too bad the console failed.
I'm in the opposite boat. Played Shenmue 1, 2, and 3 and now am interested in Yakuza thanks to my new PC and xbox gamepass. Shenmue is different than Yakuza but Yakuza is more the spiritual successor as far as environment and culture go, only with an extra pile of action heaped on top.
Shenmue is older and won't control or be as refined as Yakuza, but it's a great series in it's own right and certainly worth it at less than $7 in my opinion.
Great games. Played the originals for Dreamcast/Xbox. Very ahead of its time. Great storyline, 60% adventure/mystery, 20% fighting, 20% minigames/action sequence (think resident evil 6 quick reaction button mashes).
I highly recommend but don't expect something action packed.

Far different. More walking simulator, less smashy faces with a motorcycle.

It was insane seeing Shenmue back in the. The Dreamcast failing was a very sad thing... the system was insanely powerful. I still think most of it's games look as good as or better than most XBox/PS2/Gamecube games that came many years after the Dreamcast died.
I played this on Game Pass (before it left) I felt the controls were clunky as hell and put it down after 10 minutes. Maybe those were norm for controls 20 years ago? I'm not sure. It didn't work for me though, so makes it an easy pass now.

why failed
It couldn't compete with the PlayStation 2
