Lump is great and all, but for smoking, I find briquettes a bit more consistent in burning, less temp spikes than when using lump.
The problems is those aren't available for shipping and Academy isn't in most states.
Definitely recommend these. I usually smoke with lump but occasionally I'll smoke with briquettes. I tried these out last weekend with some dino ribs and came out perfect.

I kept getting an off, gas like flavor on meat from Kingsford blue when smoking using the Minion method. With these, no off flavor whatsoever.

Got excited for a second then realized it is for the briquettes and not the lump that was on sale a couple weeks ago

I got a lighter fluid/kerosene flavor. I thought it was my imagination when I used Kingsford, or maybe I didn't let the coals get hot enough before putting the meat on. Think I'll try Royal Oak or some other natural hardwood brand to see if I get the same flavor.

Sporting goods store. They're in about 15+ states, mostly in the mid-Atlantic area.

They have a store in Illinois....O'Fallon, if that helps, but that's basically St. Louis. They also have stores in Indiana.

Regardless, it's probably not worth it for you to drive to far. And they don't ship certain things, like this charcoal (unlike Ace).
