I hate Consumer Reports newish format. The print magazine is almost useless without an online subscription. Wish they would go back to the old format.
I agree wholeheartedly. New Consumer Reports are devoid of useful information. The new Consumer Reports leadership has really lowered the usefulness of Consumer Reports, attempting to focus on things like health and financial advice instead of reviewing products. All their reviews are significantly shorter, often only highly a few products rather than the whole market segment, and don't include many technical specifics. I find myself reading Wirecutter more and more.

Agreed. Online subscription is more valuable. With print you don't get access to any of their test report databases except what might be recently tested and printed in that particular issue. It's not worthless... But to me the value of consumer reports is looking through their reviewed products and ratings when making a large purchase. You just don't get that from print.

Consumer Reports new print format sucks. Perhaps it is part of their marketing plot to get you to purchase the online version as well? (Always remember: 'follow the money'!)

Even with the online subscription, their reviews now leave much to be desired and the online navigation is clumsy and poorly designed. I have found many of their recommended products to be inferior to those they don't recommend.

I've been a subscriber for MANY years - they have lost their credibility IMO. I'm passing on this deal and will be canceling my online subscription this year.

Is there any promotion that lowers the price of an online subscription for CR from $40 a year?

Considering this is something one would want to refer to only once in a few months before a big purchase, and the potential to expose personal data is less, are there any means to pool money to buy a subscription?

At $10 a year, to be shared amongst 4, I think it is worth having 'just in case'.

I probably subscribed to CR for 20 years, but stopped a couple of years ago when I felt they lost their integrity. In the old days CR would call out companies that kept their product price the same, but put less inside the same size box, in effect a stealth price hike. Then CR used the same underhanded, deceptive trick. Whereas a subscription used to be for 12 issues, now a "years" subscription is 9 issues. I called Bullsh*t and stopped buying CR.

What would you recommend as an alternative to CR? I always was interested in purchasing an online membership [consumerreports.org] but being a cheap basterd I never could compel myself to do it.

In your opinion, what is the best way to get unbiased and decent reviews, preferably free? Right now I'm using YouTube and various user reviews from online retailers like Amazon ECT to do my research before buying but perhaps there's a better way?
