I've switched from The North Face to Patagonia to REI, and now it is Osprey. I fly about 10-30k miles a year for work.
Here is a quick summary from my travel bag use.

TNF - Great bags, good customer service, but quality control can be lacking. Warranty is pretty good, but the cost to send in a bag will be about $20-30. You get a new bag, but it'll cost you 4-6 weeks and the price of shipping.

Patagoina - Great customer service, bags are crap.

REI - Great customer service, good bags, limited 1 year warranty.

Osprey - Great customer service, great bags, great warranty.
Same price at REI in the event anyone wants to avoid feeding into the AZN machine
I own a Porter 46 and a Porter 65. Excellent packs. The 46 is the perfect carry-on. It's the largest dimension for a carry-on and will fit a week's (Mon-Fri) worth of work clothes. And I love it that the opening is a flap so you have access to all of the contents. I would highly recommend this quality pack for even a higher quality company with one of the best warranties you can find (lifetime).

I may have to buy the Porter 30 for the trifecta.

Edit: Don't buy Amazon's extended protection plan. Osprey products already have a lifetime warranty.

I own the amazing Porter 30 travel bag. It can be used on flights as the free personal item, and just barely fits under the seat in front (see photo).

I own the Porter 46, used it as my carry on when flying internationally. This was the only item I took on my trip and was able to pack about a week's worth of clothes in there+smaller items. Highly recommend, especially at this price.

Fitting under the seat is a good bit of information to know, thanks.

I wore the black model over a black rain jacket and nobody said a word about it at the gate or the fact that fully loaded it was sort of sticking out from all sides under the seat.

I do the same thing and it's been excellent. Although the dimensions are slightly longer than the "official" dimensions on some carriers, since it's a backpack, I've been ignored.

I also have porter 46, used it on many trips and even local travel if I'm going for 3-14+ days.

it's held up well, no issues or rips. quite comfortable, fits lots of stuff.

if you pack light, it'll fit all your stuff. it's convenient to be able to walk anywhere without pulling behind a wheeled thing. for example, places with lots of people, airports, going up stairs, moving around

My only gripe with the porter 46 (which I have) is the it doesn't rest nicely if you're in long lines (ticketing, security, passport) which can get really annoying if you've got a long wait (e.g. Newark). You set it down from the handle on the top and it rolls forward.

I didn't check, but also better return policy as well in the event you truly need to return such an AWESOME bag.

Any of these can fit a 17" laptop? I am not asking about the laptop sleeve. Even the main compartment is fine.

Definitely my go-to personal item bag for multi-day conferences. Absolutely love being so light and mobile the whole time I'm traveling without having to get delayed by carry-on/check-ins.

Unlike the Farpoint 40, the laptop/tablet is right by your back, where it should be, which is a huge plus, and I've always found it amusing how the Farpoint 40 gets so much praise, while the Porter 30 seems to be a bit underappreciated.
