Yes it is expensive, but this is fairly new tech that is starting to gain traction. Main benefit of UST's are that they tend to be brighter since the projector sits so close to the wall. Coupled with Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) screen, you can get great daytime viewing with these projectors.
This TV is for folks that want a large screen but not have to contend with TV viewing in a very dark room at all times.
Competitors to this would be the Vava (noisier however, PQ a little bit better on Optoma per avsforum observations)
Another competitor would be the LG HU85LA but its pricey at nearly 6k. It uses triple lasers to emit rather than one. From what I gather only LG and Hisense have this
Projector screen for this would be any ALR UST screen. I got mine direct from manufacturer called XYscreen

in order to project a 120 inch screen, you will need a tv stand that is 30 inches in depth. this was the hardest part of the UST setup. I ended up using a low coffee table
example day time video (looks better in person):

night time viewing (the color banding is due to the camera, does not show in person)
for that dunkirk scene, the walls were NOT that bright as shown in the video. when the video gets dark around 13 second mark is what the walls actually looked like.

Any worries placing a UST projector on top of a center channel speaker? I have the Klipsch RC-64 III.

the optoma can support 3D (sbs,ou, and frame packing) The LG HU85LA does NOT support 3D.
