Picked one up in-store today, they weren't on display but they had them in the back. While looking at the display I saw the HP Pavilion 15-cs3153cl (item #1422467) for $600, which has 4 cores, 8 threads and 12gb ram vs this one with 6 cores, 6 threads and only 8gb ram. Now I'm torn, which one is the better one for the money? Also thinking that the kids might want to play some games on it down the road. Haven't opened the box yet.
Between those two, get the Envy! I can't stress that enough. I tried out one of those i7-1065G7 Pavilions, they're unreasonably loud and run hot. The Envy is a step up in terms of build quality, too, and honestly just as fast if not faster. Better iGPU too, if that's important to you.

Yes it does. However, it comes with a barrel charger and port so you'll have to buy a USB-C charger if you don't already have one.

correct. this is how hp machines stack up in term of quality premium build. It's on their website as well.

1. Spectre - I got this with 4K gorilla glass, i7 10th 16gb, 512 + 32gb optane ssd for $1042 in feb.
2. Envy - I have been looking at envy. Sitting in my cart on hp.com for last 2 months. Buying from Costco now.
3. Pavilion- I don't even look at them.

Thanks guys, I think I'll keep it. Not sure how many they'll get until the sale starts, but my store only had 8 of these on hand, so I decided to pick one up (no shipping, too) and deal with the price adjustment in two weeks...

So I have a high school Junior. Old laptop not working so well for at home elearning so thinking about upgrade (or she could just get a Chromebook loaner from the school). Trying to decide if I should get this now and mainly is it something she will be able to take to college in 2 years. Or wait til back-to-school deals?

So I set this thing up, annoying having to uninstall junkware first, but whatever. Now I noticed a screen imperfection on the left. First I thought it was a little bit of dust, but upon closer look it seems like a few subpixels (maybe 4-5) might not work properly. It's like a very short slightly darker line of maybe 1/16", though not entirely horizontal or vertical. Noticed it when I used a pixel test app. Slightly darker with most colors. Hm should I return?

I think this would work great for that, it might even be overkill. It sounds like you're looking more for longevity than performance (I doubt your daughter does much intensive gaming or video editing, etc.), so you should look for build quality over specs if you decide to wait. Nowadays, even an Intel i3 is fine for the average student's needs. Something like a Lenovo Yoga C740 would be good, but definitely wait for it to go on sale (it was on sale for $550 last week, but honestly anything under $650 is still a great deal for it). Buying from Costco is always a plus.

Looks like an average 720p webcam. I prefer 240p for my Zoom calls, but to each his own lol

Uninstalling the junkware is the ceremonial christening of a new laptop these days, you have to learn to enjoy it. You're making the laptop truly yours, while sticking it to the man.

As for the screen imperfection, the lovely thing about Costco is that they will just swap it for another one if you show them the problem. Definitely don't settle for issues on day one.

Well that's kind of the reason I buy screens from them, but at the same time I almost feel a little nit-picky. I took a closer look with a magnifying glass and it almost seems like it's dirt or something in the panel blocking the pixel lights. It's a fine line, not pixelated like if a whole subpixel wasn't working right. Guess I'll take it back :/

Hmm, that's super annoying. I wonder what Costco does with returned laptops. I'd totally buy that laptop from them for a small discount, lol. Oh well.

I got the amazon deal with 16 Gb RAM and 256 SSD. rest is same except for wifi 6 vs wifi 5. for me 16 GB RAM was more important. And also, i belive the RAM is soldered in these units, you cannot upgrade. the one from amazon is same price 599, same CPU / GPU.

The dim screen for me was a deal breaker.

I bought a similar version with less ram. The price for what you get is great, but for me the brightness of the screen was difficult to see and deal with on a regular basis. You shouldn't have any issues in low light settings though.
How dim is it?
