My nephew's 18th birthday is coming and I'm thinking of getting him something nice. He plays LOL pretty seriously (and hardly anything else), but he has a hand-me-down old laptop that can play the game fine, but cannot stream at the same time. Parents don't support the idea of a gaming laptop on princeple.

Would this "non-gaming" laptop allow LOL be played and streamed (I think OBS to twitch) at medium/low settings (720p)?

I don't play games so please forgive my ignorance. I will appreciate your advice.

Found this review from someone who's used it on Reddit. Mostly helpful for the build quality.

No abnormal fan noise, though I didn't really perform any "intensive" benchmarks. But it was pretty quiet and cool to touch in my handling of it, especially when moving back and forth from laptop to tablet mode. It's almost a one-handed lid open, but not quite. Screen flex is minimal and shouldn't be a factor. There is screen wobble when touching the screen in laptop mode. The 15" form factor and weight is definitely too big for tablet use, but is fine in laptop mode. Keyboard is tactile and keys are stable, but travel is a little short compared to thinkpad level keyboards. Backlight only has two levels and the light shines through the key legends. Build quality is great with the entire chassis being aluminum and there is no creaking when flipping the laptop around or deck-flex in typing. Hinges are standard 2-in-1 fare, but are metal and seem very durable. The power button is on the side like with the Lenovo Flex, but is a lot more solid and shouldn't be accidentally pressed.

My only major complaints are with removing the bottom panel and needing a torx security bit, as well as ripping off both of the long rubber feet, as well as the display. It's IPS and glossy 1080p as to be expected, but the brightness was not very impressive under the harsh fluorescent lights of the store. It should be serviceable for general use, but I wouldn't trust it for color accurate work.

Let me know if I forgot anything. I was also looking at a the Lenovo Flex 5 with the 4700u, 16gb RAM, and 512gb SSD for $749.99, but it seems like that RAM is soldered on, so very little upgrade path there. It also lacks Wifi 6.

anyone know if you can add a 2.5" SATA drive in addition to the NVE M.2 SSD that's installed? I added a 2TB drive to an older model Envy X360 a couple of years ago as a data / backup drive

No, you cannot from what I heard. Personally, I actually prefer it that way, allows more space for the battery and 512GB is enough for me anyway. You can always put that 2TB drive into an external enclosure and bring it along when you need it.

From what I understood Costco model is using chassis from 2019 (that is why bezels are so thick), where is best buy has new chassis from 2020 with smaller footprint overall.

The camera is 1080p compared to 720p for Costco. No pen and smaller SSD though. I have the Costco version and like it so far. 8 hours of work yesterday and no heat issues or noise. Played Valorant with high setting and was getting 100 frames. Pretty good so far.
Camera is not 1080p for the BB version per HP site.

Got mine in today from Costco. Will price match next week. Solid build Very heavy IMO. But as I'll just be using it around the house its not that big of a deal.

Does anyone have a solid deal on ram upgrade for this? Wanted to bump to 16 at least so assuming I'll need a 16GB stick (which will just bump us to 20gb) since the 4GB is soldered? (correct me if I read that wrong earlier).

I thought I read from someone that 2 8GB will work bc neither 4GB are soldered. Have you checked your laptop to see yourself?

USB charging? Anyone who has this tried charging via USB c or better yet, using it with a USB c port replicator that charges over USB c and supports dual 2k or 4k monitors? It looks like the specs would support it. I'm at Costco and the charger is the regular hp barrel charger. Sorry if this was asked before...I can't figure out how to search the comments in the app.
