Don't want to pay for the latest and greatest iPhone? You're in luck since a brand new iPhone 8 Plus with 128GB is still available and comes with a 1-year Apple warranty. I believe these cost over $800 new when released in Sept. 2017. It's yours now for $299 and still takes great pictures, water resistant, wireless charging, 5.5" display, latest iOS, etc.
There is an additional fee of $25 if upgrading (existing customers), and a $30 plan or higher is required (both new and existing customers).
If the status shows "out of stock", check back the next day or so for availability. Seems to go in/out of stock throughout the week.
UPDATE AS OF 7/24/20: $100 less if you transfer your number to CW and activate a $60 monthly plan.

Not a bad price for 128gb phone. You might might an iPhone 10 for like $499 but that's only going to be 64gb.
For kids, I would probably just get the cricket iPhone 7. Even if you just create a new account, with a dummy port in number, you're looking at $160 (phone + plus unused plan). Or even $110 for the 6s. They are older but nothing is wrong with them. Plus, their backs are made of metal. 7 adds water and dust resistance too.
If you aren't only looking at Apple, something like a Moto G Power might be nice. Huge battery and large screen, though not the most powerful for gaming. Also about $160 unlocked going through Google Fi
