Play:1's are considered "modern" and are able to be used with the latest software.
Sorry, you may not be able to pair a Play:1 and a One via surround sound in the same room. You are able to use Play:1's with other speakers in the house on the latest software. I have two Play:1's sync'd with a Beam and Sub with no issue
Play 1 can be on an S2 system so should be good for a few years. I currently use them as my rear surrounds and have other Play One's around the house.
But, they cannot "pair" with Play One's as in you have one Play:1 as L and one One as R.
As for whether this is a good price, I see that the One SLs were $129 around the holidays; that's probably a better deal and should return at some point this year.

Good price if someone is planning to use it as a standalone listening device. Not for me since I need it to be compatible with the newer iterations of their ecosystem.

If all you want is basic Sonos functionality for the cheapest price possible, this is a great deal. But like JP-OSU said, be aware that it's limited in that it can't be paired with the latest Sonos models for things like AirPlay.
But on its own, it still can use Airplay, correct?
Best bet if you have a Beam and using these for surrounds. No need for the Play One if you have a Beam as the beam has the same functionality (alexa, etc) as the One, so you only need a Play:1 if they are all paired together in the same room. And yes, they do work with the newest software version so that isn't an issue.
I currently have a beam in the bedroom with two of these as surrounds, and they work beautifully. I have a playbase in my living with a playsub and of these as surrounds and couldn't be happier. I have a beam in the upstairs game room that I still need two surrounds to pair with so I'm in for 2 more. It was either these are the Ikea versions for surround.

Can I use this independently playing music from iPhone?

That's too bad.

This is the basic function for all kinds of speakers! Of course yes!
