Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Encore can please any palate with its gamut of accurate and repeatable grind settings. The Encore has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the increasingly popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex. The specially designed burrs give a precise grind with minimal fines for a flavorful, balanced extraction when making espresso.

Until you use a good conical burr grinder, you don't really know what you're missing. (And that's okay - I didn't either until I finally took a leap of faith).

Regular "burr" grinders and traditional cheaper blade/chop grinders are very inconsistent and produce a ton of "fines". These way too fine ground pieces make your coffee bitter / off. Instead of chopping, this has two blades that almost look like gears interlocking and crushes the coffee much more consistently. How close together these burrs are determines how finely it gets ground.

The lack of consistency in the grind in general means the amount of coffee extracted with vary a ton, changing the way your coffee tastes along with it.

As for why more expensive - the burrs are more expensive, mostly. This one is great because they WILL wear down (with any grinder) and you can replace, upgrade, or repair them. This is the gold standard entry level conical burr grinder. Google "Best coffee grinder reddit" for a ton of additional info on why.

Hope that helps.

Oh man. I just paid this for a refurb direct from Baratza. My Aldi burr grinder died, and I didn't want to pay this kind of money for a disposable appliance.

For those who don't know, Baratza offers parts for their grinders - they are meant to be repaired! You can also buy an upgraded burr (the M3, I think) and this grinder will perform just like their next model up. The only practical difference is the cheaper plastic housing and the extra $80 or so in your pocket. All the grinding guts are the same. this is more or less a Buy it for Life type of product.

Ive used mine for a week, and the grounds are so much more consistent than any of my previous grinders. And that's without the burr upgrade. The motor doesn't bog down in the least while grinding beans. It would be nice to have a timer to shut off the grinder while I'm doing other things, but whatever. It works so well that I don't really care all that much.

If you have a budding coffee nerd in your life, or just want to buy once this is a great grinder.

This is a great grinder for anything except espresso. French press, pourover, standard drip...the Encore will be great.

Unfortunately it does not have enough adjustment steps or consistency at the super-fine grind settings to make great espresso with a non-pressurized portafilter setup. Their Sette line is much better if espresso is your thing.

What does ATK recommend? They're usually pretty good at their suggestions.
From what I remember they recommended this. But they also said the consistency in grind size isn't relevant and both blade and burr made an equally good cup of coffee.
I still want a burr grinder, but ideally one that grinds the same amount of beans everytime. I could be wrong, but thought this would grind until you stop it or it's out of beans.

Will this work better than grinding the coffee beans with my teeth and spitting the grounds into my Aeropress?

I've had this grinder for 5 years or so now and love it. It's been reliable and consistent over the years and haven't had to do much upkeep. The model hasn't changed much from what I can tell from when I got it, but the price sure has gone up.

They said blade v. burr grinder taste tests divided their panelists, and you can make a good cup with either - which is fine, but they still concluded a burr grinder is superior for consistency.

To get decent consistency with a blade grinder they recommend shaking after short pulses to encourage more even distribution.

The Encore still won their best burr grinder, though.

Why is this so expensive compared to other electric coffee grinders?
Another great feature is the support you get from Baratza. This grinder should last forever because they stock all the parts and will walk you through any repairs if it ever breaks. I needed a part for my 15 year old grinder and they had it. Cost me about $10 bucks and I was up and running again. This is not a throw away appliance.

I had bought this at full price before to see what the hype is compared to my OXO burr grinder and to me it seemed similar results. Baratza is more heavier and solid except for the comically loose hopper lid. I even bought the next step up, the virtuoso and it had the same inconsistent AMOUNt of grinds that the OXO does. I always weigh my grinds and despite keeping the timer to the same settings on both machines I would get varying results. This seems like a better price than usual, but will it ever go to $104 again? That was a SD

This will really get the "America's Test Kitchen" zealots fired up. Just need a slick deal on some popcorn.
You can get one from Walmart or amazon for under $20. I got mine for $12 when on sale. Makes a good roaster. 1 batch will be good for 2-3 15 grams dosage.

I've heard a lot of great things about this grinder, and I was planning on picking one up. I actually ended up finding a Breville Smart Grinder Pro for $99 at the time and grabbed that. I'm loving it so far. It's a night and day difference between the sub $15 blade grinder I was using a year ago.

Brought this from Peet's just before mother's day. Been using it regularly. Best grinder the for buck! I still use my hand grinder in the mornings to keep the noise level down. The grinder is not loud, just have a quiet home in the mornings.

After tax, only ~$5 cheaper than Whole Latte Love, for me (free shipping, no tax). And... Peet's is not listed as authorized online retailer.

Thanks OP. I have a manual grinder so this will be a massive upgrade!
I also went from manual to this one - it's much more consistent. The manual grinder wasn't consistent at all.
