Until you use a good conical burr grinder, you don't really know what you're missing. (And that's okay - I didn't either until I finally took a leap of faith).

Regular "burr" grinders and traditional cheaper blade/chop grinders are very inconsistent and produce a ton of "fines". These way too fine ground pieces make your coffee bitter / off. Instead of chopping, this has two blades that almost look like gears interlocking and crushes the coffee much more consistently. How close together these burrs are determines how finely it gets ground.

The lack of consistency in the grind in general means the amount of coffee extracted with vary a ton, changing the way your coffee tastes along with it.

As for why more expensive - the burrs are more expensive, mostly. This one is great because they WILL wear down (with any grinder) and you can replace, upgrade, or repair them. This is the gold standard entry level conical burr grinder. Google "Best coffee grinder reddit" for a ton of additional info on why.

Hope that helps.

Oh man. I just paid this for a refurb direct from Baratza. My Aldi burr grinder died, and I didn't want to pay this kind of money for a disposable appliance.

For those who don't know, Baratza offers parts for their grinders - they are meant to be repaired! You can also buy an upgraded burr (the M3, I think) and this grinder will perform just like their next model up. The only practical difference is the cheaper plastic housing and the extra $80 or so in your pocket. All the grinding guts are the same. this is more or less a Buy it for Life type of product.

Ive used mine for a week, and the grounds are so much more consistent than any of my previous grinders. And that's without the burr upgrade. The motor doesn't bog down in the least while grinding beans. It would be nice to have a timer to shut off the grinder while I'm doing other things, but whatever. It works so well that I don't really care all that much.

If you have a budding coffee nerd in your life, or just want to buy once this is a great grinder.

This is a great grinder for anything except espresso. French press, pourover, standard drip...the Encore will be great.

Unfortunately it does not have enough adjustment steps or consistency at the super-fine grind settings to make great espresso with a non-pressurized portafilter setup. Their Sette line is much better if espresso is your thing.

I had bought this at full price before to see what the hype is compared to my OXO burr grinder and to me it seemed similar results. Baratza is more heavier and solid except for the comically loose hopper lid. I even bought the next step up, the virtuoso and it had the same inconsistent AMOUNt of grinds that the OXO does. I always weigh my grinds and despite keeping the timer to the same settings on both machines I would get varying results. This seems like a better price than usual, but will it ever go to $104 again? That was a SD
Thanks

Was thinking any reason why I should pay a premium over the oxo burr grinder (regular price $100/slick deal for $70-$80)?

Seems like only reason is replaceable parts.

Refurbs on Baratza's site are $99 right now, as well
No free shipping so the refurb ends up being only a couple bucks less than this one brand new

Been using a blade grinder (gasp) for a month now with the ATK shake and grind method, one day I'll spring for one of these conical models, but for home use for 2 people the blade + aeropress does a good job.

Baratza doesn't offer free shipping, so you're going to pay a little less there for a refurb than you'll pay for a new one at Peet's.

Have had this grinder for about four years now and it's served me well.

My only real gripe is that it creates a mess no matter what, with static being part of it and the hopper never fully emptying because of it. Any help here?

FYI, I completed the DIY M2 burr upgrade. I'm fairly handy and this procedure isn't rocket science, but is a bit tedious. There are several loose parts you'll have to carefully keep track of on both disassembly and reassembly. Wouldn't want to do it again but the coffee is wonderfully consistent. I've dialed in setting 27 for french press with a 16.5:1 coffee to water ratio and can't imagine it tasting much better.

For moka pot I recommend and still use the $15 Krups blade grinder. 5 or 6 short bursts while shaking during and between bursts yields wonderfully consistent fine (but not super fine) grounds. It also spares the wear and tear on a burr grinder finer grinds produce over time.

Run a spoon or your finger under cold water for a second, shake off, then stir into your weighed beans. This small amount of moisture will greatly reduce the static in your grind.

I'll keep that in mind, the static is the only thing that ever bothers me about this grinder.

Yeah the plastic parts make static a PITA on some of these grinders. Common recommendations range from (A) stirring the beans in the hopper with a wet (rinsed/dipped) wooden spoon handle to (B) smearing dish soap onto some of the plastic parts.

Alas, those suggestions often pair with rather un-scientific methods and as such yield mixed results.

Per Baratza [1]: just wait for the static to naturally dissipate before proceeding with the next step in your brew process.

I've been eyeing one of these for a while and though I was hoping to find it cheaper, I'll just suck it up and pay. I have a bodum burr grinder but the grind size consistency is awful

From what I remember they recommended this. But they also said the consistency in grind size isn't relevant and both blade and burr made an equally good cup of coffee.
I still want a burr grinder, but ideally one that grinds the same amount of beans everytime. I could be wrong, but thought this would grind until you stop it or it's out of beans.

They said blade v. burr grinder taste tests divided their panelists, and you can make a good cup with either - which is fine, but they still concluded a burr grinder is superior for consistency.

To get decent consistency with a blade grinder they recommend shaking after short pulses to encourage more even distribution.

The Encore still won their best burr grinder, though.
Once again ATK is wrong/don't give the complete picture. If the grind size doesn't matter, why bother grinding at all? Just brew directly with whole beans.

One can shake all they want, it's not going to be consistent (I've tried). The problem are the larger pieces that didn't get grounded down, the interior of that bean is never going to get exposed to water.

Burr and blade grinders are night and day in terms of finished product.

Peet's cancelled last time when it was $111 pretax, they took a long time to cancel on a 2 day shoprunner order. I had even ordered a full day before someone posted the deal here at SD, but it still got cancelled. Ended up buying the gift from Blue Bottle, they had the new white one in stock at the time. Probably a good idea for folks to purchase from an authorized reseller for future warranty. https://baratza.com/where-to-buy/...resellers/

Info on burr upgrade can be found on reddit and https://baratza.com/encore-upgrade-gb2-0/
Man, that sucks. I got in on that deal I think even a day late and didn't have an issue aside from it taking a few business days to ship. As for the list of authorized resellers, I really doubt anyone is going to have an issue with warranty if buying from Peet's -- I assume it's just an oversight on Baratza's part. They are a pretty well known seller and are not mentioned on the "NOT Authorized Reseller" list (https://baratza.com/where-to-buy/...sellers/).
