Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Encore can please any palate with its gamut of accurate and repeatable grind settings. The Encore has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the increasingly popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex. The specially designed burrs give a precise grind with minimal fines for a flavorful, balanced extraction when making espresso.

Until you use a good conical burr grinder, you don't really know what you're missing. (And that's okay - I didn't either until I finally took a leap of faith).

Regular "burr" grinders and traditional cheaper blade/chop grinders are very inconsistent and produce a ton of "fines". These way too fine ground pieces make your coffee bitter / off. Instead of chopping, this has two blades that almost look like gears interlocking and crushes the coffee much more consistently. How close together these burrs are determines how finely it gets ground.

The lack of consistency in the grind in general means the amount of coffee extracted with vary a ton, changing the way your coffee tastes along with it.

As for why more expensive - the burrs are more expensive, mostly. This one is great because they WILL wear down (with any grinder) and you can replace, upgrade, or repair them. This is the gold standard entry level conical burr grinder. Google "Best coffee grinder reddit" for a ton of additional info on why.

Hope that helps.

Oh man. I just paid this for a refurb direct from Baratza. My Aldi burr grinder died, and I didn't want to pay this kind of money for a disposable appliance.

For those who don't know, Baratza offers parts for their grinders - they are meant to be repaired! You can also buy an upgraded burr (the M3, I think) and this grinder will perform just like their next model up. The only practical difference is the cheaper plastic housing and the extra $80 or so in your pocket. All the grinding guts are the same. this is more or less a Buy it for Life type of product.

Ive used mine for a week, and the grounds are so much more consistent than any of my previous grinders. And that's without the burr upgrade. The motor doesn't bog down in the least while grinding beans. It would be nice to have a timer to shut off the grinder while I'm doing other things, but whatever. It works so well that I don't really care all that much.

If you have a budding coffee nerd in your life, or just want to buy once this is a great grinder.

This is a great grinder for anything except espresso. French press, pourover, standard drip...the Encore will be great.

Unfortunately it does not have enough adjustment steps or consistency at the super-fine grind settings to make great espresso with a non-pressurized portafilter setup. Their Sette line is much better if espresso is your thing.

Does it also make the coffee and put creamer in there for you?

How can you tell a good conical grinder from a bad one? I had purchased a Cuisinart conical burr grinder and it was terrible. It powdered 10% of the grinds and was crazy loud.
Finally when that thing died I bought an OXO grinder and it is amazing. Not nearly as loud, no power, grinds don't stick to the bottom of the container, and grinds are very consistent. But at face value they appeared to be no different.

Had this for 8 years and it's still going strong. Can confirm previous comments about great and consistent grind.

Only gripe is that the catch container for the grinds doesn't sit all the way in and tends to shake loose a little during the grind from the vibrations. As a result I always end up with some ground coffee on the counter top. I can mitigate this by holding the container close to the grinder with one hand. Not a deal breaker but annoying all the same.

Haven't experienced this problem at all. Might be worth calling Baratza. Excellent customer service. Wouldn't surprise me if they sent you a new catch bin just to see if it helps.

Good to know as I've experienced something very similar.

You just said grinds are consistent with Oxo. That's part of the reason for getting a burr grinder. The other parts are ability to set a preferred grind size and then usability factors such as timer.

$14 off isn't anything to write home about. Spending $125 on a toy like this seems pretty silly when you can make good coffee with just a mortar and pestle.

I had bought this at full price before to see what the hype is compared to my OXO burr grinder and to me it seemed similar results. Baratza is more heavier and solid except for the comically loose hopper lid. I even bought the next step up, the virtuoso and it had the same inconsistent AMOUNt of grinds that the OXO does. I always weigh my grinds and despite keeping the timer to the same settings on both machines I would get varying results. This seems like a better price than usual, but will it ever go to $104 again? That was a SD
Does your OXO have a hard time keeping a consistent flow of beans from the hopper? Unless I tap mine throughout, I can hear it going dry until more beans fall in

Any thoughts on how the Encore compares to the Capresso Infinity? I was able to acquire an Infinity for free and love it, but the clean up is a pain. However I am pleased with the size, quietness and performance of the Capresso.
Same question. Not sure if this would be worth upgrading for a more consistent grind. Anyone use both that can comment?

Been using a blade grinder (gasp) for a month now with the ATK shake and grind method, one day I'll spring for one of these conical models, but for home use for 2 people the blade + aeropress does a good job.
You will wish you spent the money earlier when you eventually get a burr.

No, not once.... sorry, just realized that wasn't a reply to my comment.

I get that. I'm just trying to understand what to look for in a burr grinder because I have gotten such different results from similarly priced burr grinders that until I got my OXO, I would have assumed did approximately the same thing.
