Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Encore can please any palate with its gamut of accurate and repeatable grind settings. The Encore has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the increasingly popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex. The specially designed burrs give a precise grind with minimal fines for a flavorful, balanced extraction when making espresso.

Until you use a good conical burr grinder, you don't really know what you're missing. (And that's okay - I didn't either until I finally took a leap of faith).

Regular "burr" grinders and traditional cheaper blade/chop grinders are very inconsistent and produce a ton of "fines". These way too fine ground pieces make your coffee bitter / off. Instead of chopping, this has two blades that almost look like gears interlocking and crushes the coffee much more consistently. How close together these burrs are determines how finely it gets ground.

The lack of consistency in the grind in general means the amount of coffee extracted with vary a ton, changing the way your coffee tastes along with it.

As for why more expensive - the burrs are more expensive, mostly. This one is great because they WILL wear down (with any grinder) and you can replace, upgrade, or repair them. This is the gold standard entry level conical burr grinder. Google "Best coffee grinder reddit" for a ton of additional info on why.

Hope that helps.

Oh man. I just paid this for a refurb direct from Baratza. My Aldi burr grinder died, and I didn't want to pay this kind of money for a disposable appliance.

For those who don't know, Baratza offers parts for their grinders - they are meant to be repaired! You can also buy an upgraded burr (the M3, I think) and this grinder will perform just like their next model up. The only practical difference is the cheaper plastic housing and the extra $80 or so in your pocket. All the grinding guts are the same. this is more or less a Buy it for Life type of product.

Ive used mine for a week, and the grounds are so much more consistent than any of my previous grinders. And that's without the burr upgrade. The motor doesn't bog down in the least while grinding beans. It would be nice to have a timer to shut off the grinder while I'm doing other things, but whatever. It works so well that I don't really care all that much.

If you have a budding coffee nerd in your life, or just want to buy once this is a great grinder.

This is a great grinder for anything except espresso. French press, pourover, standard drip...the Encore will be great.

Unfortunately it does not have enough adjustment steps or consistency at the super-fine grind settings to make great espresso with a non-pressurized portafilter setup. Their Sette line is much better if espresso is your thing.

Best grinder setting for standard drip coffee on the Encore?
Grind settings vary between coffees. You'll have to experiment with each bag to find what tastes best to you. There is no set and forget.

Loving this grinder a few years running now. Picked it up from another SD, from Starbucks, was $75 shipped - had no idea that was such a fantastic deal. Would still buy at this price.

Does your OXO have a hard time keeping a consistent flow of beans from the hopper? Unless I tap mine throughout, I can hear it going dry until more beans fall in
Sometimes but more likely if hopper is less full. The weight of the beans in a full hopper would feed the grinder consistently.

Free shipping with the discount from Peets plus tax in NY costs: $136.20. It's actually a better deal to purchase from Happy Mug Coffee in PA...comes to $139 no tax free shipping to NY plus they give you a free ($9-worth) 12oz bag of coffee beans of your choosing. I ordered from there a few weeks ago on a Thurs and it was delivered on Saturday. Definitely recommend.

My brother got one of these for $75. I haven't tried it for espresso. It broke after a short time. He had to pay about the same amount to have it fixed and paid much for shipping. When he got it back, the wing of the wing nut was broken off and rolling around inside. That's sh!t quality control. The technician, packer and shipper and everyone who moved it through their process didn't heat that?! It sounded like a baby's rattle.

I've made many a cup with it but recently, for no reason, the coffee demons denied me a good cup. I used it the same as always and let it run for the same amount of time to get the correct amount of grinds for a cup as always but the finished cup looked more like weak tea rather than a black cup of coffee.

A friend of mine uses a different grinder that costs a lot less than this one. It's silver. I'll have to look it up. He says it's a champ. He's an espresso fiend.

For all those saying this will not grind to espresso - you just need to recalibrate. There are a ton of videos/instructions on how like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyQ_AywdBRQ

It is a fairly easy process and yields good results. I have the virtuoso and it is going strong on ~9 years. The maintainability and flexibility of these is a real selling point IMO.

Their support is amazing. I've reached out several times about burr upgrades or small issues I've had, and they've always taken care of me.

They support their products and have all the parts for them which is a breath of fresh air compared to modern tech companies.

This is the least expensive I've ever seen it. I own one. It's loud, the ground catcher doesn't want to stay in place- It wants to slide out a bit when grinding which can cause grinds to go behind the catch. All that being said, this is a bad ass coffee grinder. very consistent grinds. If you want to get serious about the flavor of your coffee, it does make a difference. But if you just load your coffee down with sugar/ creamer I'm not sure how much of a difference this quality of grinder would make.

Something to consider- at this price, with the M2 burr upgrade and shipping ($40 total from Baratza) the total comes out to around $165. But a refurb Virtuoso+ which includes the M2 burr by default plus a metal body and some extras features, is $200 shipped. So there a few ways to look at this- you can buy the Encore and get most of the Virtuoso functionality for almost $100 less, or you can buy the Virtuoso and not have to take anything apart and get more features for only $35 more.

I love the fact that there's a less expensive DIY option, especially for anyone who already owns an Encore, but I'm leaning towards getting the Virtuoso in this case.

Have the big brother to this, the virtuoso, and it's REALLY GOOD at bigger than espresso grinding but mediocre for espresso.

If you want an all in one, this thing is great, but don't expect good espresso grind quality from this. Pour over, french press, drip, aeropress, cold brew are all perfect with this though!
