Don't overlook the federal and (possibly) local rebates available either.

There is a $300 federal rebate.

I'm going to guesstimate $1-1.5k. Whoever got a $500 quote is crazy.

What kind of life expectancy would we get out of one of these units?

It seems like I typically go through a gas hot water heater every ten years.

Mine is 26 years old. We make it a habit to turn down the temperature setting when not using it. Turn it up when ready to shower, washing clothes / dishes, etc. I have heard people talking about 30 or more years. May be it has something to do with the water & pressure.

Try your local contractors. I had one that install for $350. Found him on Thumbtack.

This. I think mine installed was around $4k but its a larger unit than this. They had to re-run the plumbing and installed a hot water loop so that's why the price was a little higher. I also had them put it in a different location than where the tank was before so gas needed to be run over there.

Make sure your gas meter can handle the high flow of these units along with other users like your furnace/stove/dryer/etc. Just something worth checking before you have it installed.

We've had ours for a couple years now and its the best decision we ever made. Never have to worry about running out of hot water.

Good point. I was about to say the same thing. Call your gas company... It's free to upgrade (at least for PGE). Your tankless will most likely require a larger gas line than your typical tank water heater.

I upgraded mine when I installed our tankless. I ended up running a new 1 inch gas line from the meter to my tankless. The manual will tell you the pipe size you'll need. I have a Navien 240 so couldn't use my existing 1/2inch line that also fed other appliances.
