But definitely read the book too if you get a chance. it's really good. A lot of sci fi, a lot of commentary on war and the military itself. And it isn't like ANTI war or military... it is essentially talks about the need to wage war when necessary but ONLY when necessary.
The movie in its own way did the same thing by satirizing the glorification of war.

LOL, honestly that book bored the hell out of me. Felt like I was reading an instruction manual. No wonder the movie ignored most of the book.
A very fascist idea
Norway
Finland
Sweden
Denmark
Israel
Switzerland
And others, but the main point being that these aren't exactly fascist countries, or anything close to it. It's not even a "well if you want to have voting rights..." it's more of a "you MUST serve." Granted, a few of those listed above have a non-combat service alternative, it's typically similar to what you had to do to get out of the draft in the US's Vietnam era with a conscientious objector and serve in the Peace Corps.
The Heinlein version is similar in the sense that you have the RIGHT to serve in order to become a citizen with voting rights, even if you have a medical disability, though you can do alternative service in such a case. I haven't read the whole book yet so I don't know every detail, I read part of it when I was in...guess what? US Army basic training
