I bought these for a family trip and ended up returning them. Both kids (5 and 8 at the time) said they were uncomfortable. Worse is that the cause the kids to slouch, moving their butts away from the back of the seat so their legs could bend over the front of the seat. Otherwise they would have had to sit with their legs sticking straight out in front of them. I love the concept of this seat, it it just didn't work in practice.
It depends what kind of car seat you're talking about... These function fine as "belt-positioning boosters". Of course not as much protection as something with a tall plastic wrap-around frame. But if you're traveling or Uber-ing with kids, or if kids only occasionally ride with grandma, these are very easy to pack and much better than nothing.

I have two of them for my kiddos - I wouldn't get them instead of more comfortable seats for daily use, but for the occasions where a portable car seat is helpful, they're great. Recommended at this price.
This is a great idea considering kids are now required to be in boosters basically until they start driving themselves nowadays

Anyone study these enough to discuss their actual safety testing?

Presumably booster seat doesn't provide additional safety as car seat does.

We considered this for a family trip, but decided against it because I read the same set of complaints from other users.

We got the Bubble Bum instead and we're very happy with them - good easy-to-carry size, no complaints about comfort, and easy to use.

This is really for short term solutions such as Uber or a quick trip in grandma's car like some else mentioned. Would not recommend on long trips. One of my clients introduced me to it when they used it in a loaner car while their vehicle was being serviced. I can't count the amount of times I've seen parents struggle to get a car seat out and install it into a loaner only to do it all over again the next day. I bought one and use it when my son needs to hitch a ride with a friend or family.

Tested them on my kids. They have a 25% failure rate.

Have this, really useful for short Uber rides, vacations to places like orlando where you would just need this for a ride from airport to hotel. Folds into a hand bag. Complements a car seat instead of replacing one.

We have purchased several of these. One for grandma to keep in her glove box, one for when we travel by plane and rent a car, Uber, etc. Super handy to have around.

Got us a boostpak years ago and they are great if still available for sale: http://www.boostapak.com/home.html

Having a booster seat that adds height and doubles as a backpack for storage is ideal for trips. Awesome if you can find one.

If it's too big or unavailable, there is another inflatable option with better reviews: https://www.amazon.com/Hiccapop-U...07RB2KRCS/

For a child seat, I think safety is more important than saving a few bucks, but to each their own.
